Hello,

Here are some system specs

Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop
Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.5 GHz
2 sticks of RAM (4GB each)
Not sure if you need anything else

My computer will randomly shut down. I could be doing anything, watching a movie, surfing the internet, playing a game etc.... Also it doesn't go to a blue screen or reboot. It just shuts down and completely shuts off. I can turn it right back on though.

So here is what I have tried. I tried to see if it was the power brick or battery and it isn't. I tested the laptop by running off power only and it still shut down. I also tried running off of battery only and it shut down so that eliminates those.

I also checked temperature with coretemp. Now this processor has 2 cores and they usually hover around 48 - 66 degrees C per core. When it goes to the 66 degrees you can hear the fan running louder to keep it cool. The max temp for this processor is 105 degrees C according to core temp. Is this the problem? I know the max temp is 105 but I don't know if that is per core or both cores combined?

So I also tested the RAM with memtest86. Now the memtest will shut down at about the 30 min mark every time I run it. At the exact same time. I tried running this many times. So what I also tried is running it with 1 stick of RAM in each slot. Now initially what happened is the computer shut down in only the 1 slot so I thought I had the problem figured out that it was a bad RAM slot. So for about 2 days I had the memory in the good slot and everything was working until last night. Now the memtest will shut down in both slots at the 30 min mark with either sticks of RAM. I tried each stick in each slot and it shut down. I even tried getting new RAM and it still shut down during memtest.

So I am at a loss of what the problem could be. Is it a heating issue? motherboard? Any suggestions would be a great help.

Oh, I also forgot to say that I ran a chkdisk on the hard drive and show no bad sectors and it showed no problems with it. Just thought I would add that as well.
