Can not delete files from external backup drive

I am not able to delete files from the external backup drive because it says, "The file name is too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again or try a location that has shorter path"

There is no way to change the file name. If I right click on a file, it only has options to "Open With" or "Send To", there is no "Rename" option. If I just hit Delete on the keyboard, it asks if I want to delete it permanently because it is too large for recycle bin, and then it says- it can not delete it because the file name is too long for the destination folder. Well- if I dont send it to any folder, I just want to delete it, why would it not just delete it? Any other options?

Some side information: this is Seagate 2 TB external drive that stores backups from my old systems as well as my main computer. Once it actually made a backup of itself and went in to a loop of copying itself over and over. It was assigned a letter M then. I could only select C and D to back up but I was backing up "everything", so it backed up M on to M, then it realized that it just got bigger and backed up itself again, and again and again and again... So now I want to delete all that stuff, but it not able to delete files that look like web site addresses, and this is why it keeps the folders and directories in which these files were located.

This is annoying. I am ready to format the entire drive. But it has my old systems back ups. Most of those files migrated to the new systems but I was keeping them just in case. I also have those systems in the house... Should I just format this madness? But then it would get rid of Dashboard software and other Seagate data that came with the drive... What to do? I can ignore it but I dont like disorder. It would help if I find the way to delete all those files that have file names too large to be deleted... makes no sense... Thanks for reading and your help.

Solution
I deleted most of them by changing individual folders names to one letter and shortening the path, which is not very bright solution. Also I wanted to try Command Prompt but did not know what command is for Erase or Delete.
