Connecting an Xbox 360 wired controller to Windows 8 PC?

Hi, I plugged it in and it made the 'bleep bleep bloop' sound, and it it detecting it as an 'unspecified' item in my devices and printers. The light is red on the conrtoller (Not the ring, the one connecting to the wire). But it won't work on anything.

Then it's not a wired controller, it's a wireless controller with a USB play and charge kit and it won't work without a wireless 360 receiver.

It should come off. It's called a play and charge kit, it supplies power so a 360 controller can be charged. The fact that you said it has a red light on it, is the dead giveaway.
