Hey guys. This is the final thread I'm making before I build my new gaming pc in the next week or so, which I want to last at least 4 years.

I've decided that I want to build my own pc, and in order to do that my plan is to ensure that the CPU is strong enough that I won't ever need to upgrade it in the next 5 years (4 years would be good enough)

In effect, a CPU that allows overclocking is an absolute necessity. I5 4690k seems like the perfect option for the price.

I plan to take the DVD burner/writer from my old pc to save a couple bucks, as well as a high quality Antec 550w continuous 80 PLUS gold PSU. As well as my 1TB WD Hard drive, with windows 7 on it.

My other question is, what is the disadvantage to a mATX board? As far as I understand, a mATX motherboard can support any GPU as long as the case is large enough enough. Assuming I have a mid-tower ATX case, and that mATX motherboards are cheaper, i see no disadvantages?

Solution
It definitely has two PCIe x16 slots, I can see them! :p

You might be better off using PCPartPicker than trawling through the annoying lists of Newegg. Not to mention that this would be better than any of the Newegg bundles, having dual channel RAM and a cooler to overclock your 4690K.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Micro Center)
CPU Cooler: RAIJINTEK AIDOS BLACK 48.6 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.21 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($119.99 @ B&H)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($45.99 @ Newegg)...

What do you mean they lack upgrades?

Also, according to a pcpartpicker, even with a GTX 980ti, I still wouldn't draw more than 450w.

It sounds like my Antec 550w could virtually power anything, especially since its 80+ GOLD.

There is little difference nowadays. In fact, most manufacturers can stuff all of the features of a full sized ATX board into a MicroATX form factor. I would only go with an ATX board for aesthetics (fills the case more, less cables to be seen) and for larger multi-GPU compatibility (3-4 way SLI/Crossfire).

thing about pc part picker is the parts all come from different sourcs, right? So they will all arrive at different times, meaning there is a greater risk for damage/theft? While newegg will ship all my components together in one package?

I'm a little apprehensive about shipping pc parts. Is it safe?

I've never heard of that CPU cooler* before. Did you pick it at random or do you know if its actually good?

You're scared that people are going to steal your PC parts if you get them without Newegg? Well, that's a new one :p

It's perfectly safe, and it's very unlikely that parts will be damaged if you get them shipped. They are packaged and shipped exactly the same way that Newegg would do so.

That's the CPU listed in every one of the bundles you listed! It's the best gaming CPU on the market.

I think the apprehension of having to wait a few days between each individual part arriving would kill me.

LOL JK.

Thank you in any case.

Any recommended cases? Rather I should ask, what type of case do I need? a mid tower, ATX, I assume? how many fans should it have?

I'm contemplating buying a used case off craigslist. Is this one fine? its only 10 dollars and it looks to be ATX, yes? http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/sop/5116469011.html

No, that looks utterly terrible. No options for cable management, top mounted PSU (affects airflow) and plain ugly to look at. A nice MicroATX case (that I worked with less than 6 hours ago, building a PC for a client) is the Cooler Master N200.
