There are reports of EVERY piece of hardware ever made having issues. Lots of issues. It doesn't mean that every card will. Anything that uses a chip will stand to have varying degrees of performance, different thermal properties, stability or failures. This is where it becomes important to go with a product made by a company that doesn't quibble about replacement if it becomes necessary.

I really haven't seen hardly any complaints here on the forums in regard to the EVGA or Gigabyte 970, 980 or 980 TI, although the 980 TI is so new and priced in a range that a lot of users won't pay, that it's unlikely to see as many relevant threads regarding them. Since price is always a factor for me I got the Zotac AMP! edition (non-extreme) it's the same price as reference but has three fans. Have not had a problem. There is also a Zotac card that has a water-block and fans pre-installed. It is pretty expensive but you mentioned not currently having water-loop, weren't sure if you were planning on getting one.

I like the Gigabyte G1 gaming or EVGA Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+. Both companies have very good customer service and I've never had either company quibble on the rare occasions I've had to RMA something for a client or myself. I haven't installed or used any 980 TI models yets, but the overall reports on those models seems to be very good.

Zotac is definitely a cheaper way to go, but since they're a second tier manufacturer, what you get and the level of support may not be as good as with some others.

I was planning on getting the g1, but then saw the reports of some DVI ports failing and the card whining. Should I take the GPU RNG Lottery and pray I didn't get a defect?

People still use DVI? Coil whine is a thing you may get on any card and most reports of whine on the G1 I have heard say that it fades away after about a week, completely or to a point that it is not an issue.

The 970 and 980 cards had rather inflated reporting about the coil whine and of course the 3.5Ghz debacle, so I don't expect the 980 TI has been any less blown up. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Thanks for the reassurance. Im planning on selling some of my old parts and saving up for a new card, hopefully the G1 works without any problems :D
