hey, now i'm planning to build a new gaming pc and i was really confused between the two choices
weather to get (Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 + Intel Core I5-4690K) or (Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 + Intel Core I7-4790K)

hi, Get the i5+980, you will have the best performance with his setup, better spend a little more on the gpu because is the most important part in gaming. Right now i7 and i5 has the same performance in games, you will not see any difference between them in gaming, just in rendering, or editing.

Yeah, the I5 rig is probably better right now. The I7 will give minimal perfomance increase in games, while a gtx 980 will be much better than a 970

Also I've been considering getting a 4790k and a gtx 970 so in the future I can just sli for more horsepower.

OC that 4690k for now and get a 980, don't sli-970's if you're going to 1440p or 4k game, xfire r9 390's are better for that by a significant margin : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9cKZiJw6Pk

I had sli-970's and the 3.5 gb really bothered me enough to get a 980 ti instead since 4k gaming is a vram hog. I mean gta v easily takes over 5gb of vram for breakfast @4k

If you don't want overclock the cpu, then consider Xeon processor. Here some prices for United States from PCPartPicker.

So, that would make these combo prices:

i7-4790K + GTX 970: $ 634
vs
i5-4690K + GTX 980: $ 703
vs
E3-1231 + GTX 980: $ 741

That Xeon processor have almost the processing power and hyper threading from i7, but no integrated graphics chip and it can't be overclocked. But the price is like an i5. So, if you don't overclock, that Xeon processor is recommended in my opinion. If you can, get the 980 graphics card.
