Desktop is not able to connect to internet using ethernet after system restart

I have windows 8.1 desktop which was able to connect to the internet through Ethernet. I restarted my system for another purpose and after that I am n ot able to connect to the internet. The wifi router has 4 Ethernet ports. My laptop is able to connect wireless to the router and I am able to browser the net. My mobile devices are also able to connect wirelessly to the router. I tried connecting the lan cable to my laptop to check if there is any issue in the desktop. But even in laptop , lan does not work. I also changed the lan cable and checked on both desktop and laptop. It does not work. Only wifi works. Kindly advise.I also restarted my router many times but it was of no use. I tried to access my router admin page 192.xxx.xxx.xxx but it shows as unable to connect. Even through wifi, the router admin page does not work.
 
Solution
It seems like you are not getting DHCP on the wired network. What do you get when you type in ipconfig /all in a dos window. Many routers disable access to the admin of the router by wireless(for security reasons). You may have to manually set up your IP on the desktop, and then get to the admin page of the router.

You could also try a hard reset of the router.

Thanks for the reply. I did restart the router. But the issue is still the same.

Thanks for the reply. In the network adapter section in device manager, there is no exclamation mark to any of the devices listed there. I can see a virtual box adapter, my regular network adapter and also TAP-Windows adapter 9. This all seems to have happened after a system restart !!!

Solution
Hello... A fast way to get previous settings back is loading a "restore point" they can be created manually or they get created automatically after a software install... look at "more restore points" for dates and times when everything was running good.
I have had Microsoft suggested "update driver" cause my Realteks lans to stop working... so you could re-load a driver for your LAN hardware to get it back to defaults... Use the one from the Chip makers website.

Just wanted to add this information too...My feeling is that, I don't think this is a problem of the desktop. Because even with the laptop , I can connect only wirelessly and not through lan cable even if I changed the cable.
I right clicked on the network icon and selected "Troubleshoot problems".After a while ,it showed, "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP Configuration. "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP Configuration. In details of each, I see "Investigate router or broadband modem issues".

I did ipconfig all,how do I interpret the results. I have forgotten it as I can a lot of information of different adapters. I am afraid to do a hard reset, incase I loose even the wifi too and then I can't even post these messages.
 
If you connect your laptop to the wireless, then you should be able to compare the ipconfig results.
Your looking at the IP address which should look similar to 192.168.1.x on the laptop. subnet is probably 255.255.255.0. Also the gateway(router) which is probably 192.168.1.1 and a DNS server which will vary(by ISP). You should also see that the settings were set by DHCP. The desktop should look similar if DHCP is working correctly.

If you need to, you could set the IP address manually. Put in a address that is higher than the laptop. If the laptop has 192.168.1.5 set the desktop to something like 192.168.1.225. That way it shouldn't collide with anything that dhcp actually handed out. The other settings should be the same as the laptop.

Once this is done, you should be able to connect to the router admin page.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried system restore , but it did not help. Temporarily I have borrowed a usb wireless adapter and have connected that to my desktop so that it can connect wirelessly to wifi and it works that way. But this is just a temporary arrangement.

I will try your suggestion after a few days or after sometime as some other work has come up now.

Also I wonder if the lan part of the hardware in the router has gone for a toss.
