How do I know if I am recording a game?

How do I know if I am recording a game with OBS? What I mean is like other game recorders, they show FPS and when you record, the FPS display turns to a different color. Can I do something like that with OBS?

Is there any reason for using OBS? Shadowplay and the AMD-counter par are a lot better and less demanding if you are not streaming, where OBS is, feature wise, superior.

(AFAIK OBS doesn't have a FPS counter)
