When I connected my WDD my passport ultra 1TB external hard disk, it prompted me for scanning and fixing the errors. I started it and I accidentally canceled the scan. Now my hard disk is not getting recognized. I tried connecting it in a different PC the same prob persists. I tried chkdsk /f in the command prompt but I didn't see any scan results nor did i see any sign of such a scan taking place in the cmd prompt. Just the command was displayed nothing more than that. What do I do? I have many of my office related files and other important stuff in there. I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks a lot! Kindly help.

Chkdsk will not work in that case.

Go to BIOS and see whether it appears as 0 MB over there as well. If this is the case, I doubt that you will be able to access the data with software tools. This would mean that either the enclosure or the HDD itself had failed. In both cases, you will need to use some professional help in case the data is really important.

In case it appears as having its full capacity in BIOS, you can try the recovery tool as well as the Ubuntu Live CD approach.

Is the drive under warranty? In case it is, you can contact WD's Support and eventually RMA it.(you get another drive but you lose the data)

Hi there jyo7,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(

How is the drive recognized by Disk Management? Does it have healthy partitions and/or file system. I guess you may need to use some data recovery tool: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
Save the data on another drive. Just make sure not to overwrite the data on this drive.

After you recover the data, you can just reformat the drive as Dr Parker already suggested. Then, you can test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and check out its health status.

WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=qWe7pB

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Thanks a lot for the reply Dr.Parker and D_Know_WD. Isn't there a way to rectify this error? I am afraid that if try out data recovery tools, I may also lose some data in the process. Or could you suggest me a good data recovery software that won't result in data loss because there are many important files in there.

Also initially the hard disk was not displayed but now its getting displayed as F drive but when I try to click its not responding and the screen freezes.

@D_Know_WD: I will check the hard disk with the WD's DL diagnostic tool as you've suggested and will let you know the results.

In case the data on the drive is really important, just keep in mind that your safest bet of recovering it is to just contact a data recovery company. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=7wWgBa

How is the drive recognized by Disk Management? Can you provide a screenshot.
The fact that the HDD appears under My Computer and hangs could indicate that the HDD is failing(due to multiple bad sectors would be my guess).

Another thing you can try is to boot up Ubuntu from a CD or another external drive and see whether you will be able to access the HDD. In case you can do that, just transfer your data to your internal HDD. Check this out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

Also, it is unlikely that tools that do not write on the HDD but just transfer the recovered data on another HDD could further damage the data.(the tool in my first post).

Cheers,

Ok, so you can try(except for using professional help):

1st - Try accessing the drive with some data recovery tools as in the first link I've provided. You need to save the data on another drive if recovered.
2nd - Try the Ubuntu Live CD thing. In case all of this is caused by bad sectors, there is a chance that you will be able to explore the drive with Ubuntu.
3rd - If the previous two do not work, try running disk check as an Administrator: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/external-hard-drive-unreadable/3cd86697-3ee2-46e4-8758-344d6be4d894

Apart from all this, have you tried something simple as just using a different USB cable? If you haven't, it will not hurt to try that as well.

I will try chkdsk /r again. But now the device is itself not recognized. So could you please help me how to do chkdsk and fix the errors. All the help is much appreciated.

Thanks for your response D_Know_WD. I have some personal files too in there and some office related confidential files. That's why I'm hesitant about giving the hard disk away. I thought I would try formatting and then try some recovery software thinking I will at least get a few of the files but it seems that's I'm not even able to format it. Could you help me please? I've asked a friend of mine to help me with the Ubuntu thing as I'm not much of a computer savvy. I will let you know once its done.

Yeah I should've kept it in 2 different hard disks. I've asked my friend to check this hard disk once again. I hope he finds the issues and resolves it. Thanks for the assistance though. :) Much appreciated!
