I am planning to build a gamin PC soon and have a decent idea about what parts I am wanting to put in it, however I would welcome any input that I could get. I will be using it for gaming(primarily modded skyrim) and would like it to be able to play on ultra with no problems. The base parts I'm looking at are:

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHZ Quad Core
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB Windforce
Asus Z97-Pro ATX LGA1150 MoBo
Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-1866
Corsair RM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

I'm a little questionable about whether or not I need that much RAM or that large of a power supply. Also may switch to the Nvidia GTX970. As far as the MoBo it was sorta a guess after doing a little reading so would definitely welcome advice in that dept. as well! And as far as cases, hard drives, dvd/ blu-ray, well, that's the least of my worries right now haha. Although if you have any suggestions on handy well designed cases, I'd be happy to hear about them. As I mentioned in the title I'm planning to run the to a 55" LG 3D Smart TV(I know, not everybody's first choice). From what I understand that doesnt really effect anything, but let me hear your opinions please! Thanks to all who take the time to read and comment!!

Well r9 390 is statistically better and it beats gtx 970 by around 5 fps in some games and even more in others. It may not have a lot of OC headroom as the gtx 970 does BUT when overclocked, it will still beat any overclocked 970. Now the main difference in these two is the memory. R9 390 has 8 GB of vram and gtx 970 has 3.5 GB of fast memory and 500 MB of...

As for the CPU get i5 4690k if you want to overclock and if not just get the non K version. As for the GPU get r9 390. As for the ram get 16 GB kingston hyperx fury 1866 cl10 ram, they are cheaper than corsair's ram and give the same performance. For you PSU, you don't really need 750 W unless you will do some crazy CPU and GPU overclocks, 650 W is plenty. You can get corsair's RM 650 or CM's v650 since they are both good PSU's. For your motherboard just get asus's z97-K, it's a good motherboard at a lower price. With all the money you saved if you saved some get a good cpu cooler. Noctua's nh-d15 as a high performance cooler or CM hyper 212 evo for something around 4.2 Ghz overclock. As for your storage, get WD blue 1 TB and for your ssd get samsung or kingston ssd's since they are the best ones. For your case i recommend you Fractal Design Define R5, BeQuiet silent base 800, Cooler Master silencio 652s, Nzxt h440. They are all great and pick the one that suits your taste.

Why do you choose the r9 390 GPU over the gtx 970 if you don't mind me asking? Is that personal preference or statistically better performance? And also would it be in my best interest to probably buy a 750w PSU in case I had intentions of overclocking at some point? And that being said would that still be a good cooling unit(if I were to be running the system overclocked)?

Well r9 390 is statistically better and it beats gtx 970 by around 5 fps in some games and even more in others. It may not have a lot of OC headroom as the gtx 970 does BUT when overclocked, it will still beat any overclocked 970. Now the main difference in these two is the memory. R9 390 has 8 GB of vram and gtx 970 has 3.5 GB of fast memory and 500 MB of slow memory. In today's gaming 3.5 GB is enough to play in 1080p. The only game that uses 3.5 GB is Shadow of Mordor so 3.5 GB of vram is not a problem TODAY. If some game demands more than 3.5 GB you will have to lower the AA or some other details in order to play the game smoothly. Now gtx 970 is still a good card and nvidia gives you a lot of software support to make the game look more realistic but when we look at the price to performance...r9 390 is better. As far as the overclocking goes, even with r9 390 your system won't use more than 500 W when not overclock so overclocked would use around 600 W so in that case 750 W would be nice and that power supply(RM750) is a great choice. Don't forget that when overclocking you void you warranty and you're doing it at your own risk! If you want to overclock your cpu to about 4.2 Ghz go with hyper 212 evo so your cpu can be cooled and your fan to be dead silent. If you want to go anything above that go with nh-d15. I don't prefer water cooling because it's noisy and I'm a bit of a silence freak and I don't like having liquid in my system. Don't forget that with air cooling the ONLY thing that can die is the fan. Nh-d15 might be big but it's extremely silent. Oh yea, one more thing. When you are buying case, buy the one that has a width of 8" or more so you can fit those big air coolers.

Now here are some videos so you can watch in order to understand the current situation:

gtx 970 vs r9 390 videos

Nh-d15
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swijjjpVR0s - I prefer watching this one than the other because it gives you more info
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emFN5KeGGnc

Hyper 212 evo - basically just installing of the cooler
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n47WBQI31eE
Now I have seen some people overclocking their i5's up to 4.4 Ghz with this cooler and basically your CPU overclock depends on what kind of CPU you have. So some will overclock up to 4.6 on 1.25V and some may overclock up to 4.4 on 1.25 V. The temperature won't rise because of the bigger speed, it will rise because of the bigger voltage.

Overclocking, now if you really want to overclock go with the i5 4690k because it gives you better thermal material so your cpu will actually run cooler and it's a much better overclocker than the i5 4670k
