I'm new to this Forum. And quite new to assembling a computers myself. I've been Gaming for a big majority of my life. I built a system a little more than a year ago with these specs:

i5-4670K @ 3.40GHz (however upon noticing on CPU-Z it fluctuates to about 3.50-3.60Hz)
8gb RAM (2x4 1330Hz)
GTX 770 DirectCU II OC by ASUS
Gigabyte H87-D3H.
Corsair 700 Watt PSU (can't remember exact naming)

Onto the main query that I have, I want to overclock my machine (or just increase my computer's performance), however the mobo that I currently have installed doesn't support it from what I found from a review I happened to misread.

Is there any precautions I must take in order to install a new motherboard? Is it worth the time and money to replace the motherboard? If not, what can I do to increase performance (particularily in gaming side of things). Or should I just invest into a GTX 980? Increase RAM? Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
The Ram is only 1333. You should bump it up to some low latency ( CAS 7 or 8 ) DDR3 1600 if possible.

770 is not bad if you are gaming at 1080p 60hz. . It usually sits somewhere between a 960 and 970 performance wise.

I'm running with 1080p at the moment. And I don't see it changing for a while to come. What are some recommended RAM?

What brand/model of RAM do you have at the moment? It may be possible to get it to 1600.

Okay, so you'll stay on 1080p for a while - that doesn't mean that in 6 months, new games will be out that you'll play and the 770 will not do so well on.

From the responses I'm getting, I will definitely upgrade my RAM to 1600 (as that's the highest my mobo can support) and my GPU to at least a GTX 970. The problem I have with upgrading GPUs in general is if I don't know when Nvidia/ATI will release a more efficient or superior card.
