Recently upgraded to an SSD. Installed the new SSD into SATA1 (mobo manual says Intel SATA 6gb/s is on 1,2,7,8) and disconnected the old WD Black. Close up case, POSTs, BIOS recognizes the 850 as being on SATA1. AHCI mode is enabled. Save changes and reboot. Windows 7 installer says, 'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.'

I've tried plugging the SSD into SATA2 with the same result. Appears in BIOS, but cannot install Windows.

Unfortunately most of the Google results I find deal with not having it in AHCI which it appears to be.

The motherboard is: MSI Z77A-GD65

Thanks in advance!

You can change to AHCI mode after installing in IDE mode.

It appears that this might work. However, I'm concerned that I won't be using the full potential of the SSD if not using AHCI mode. Can this be changed later without problems? Will installing not in AHCI cause problems?

Yes, according to manual and sticker on mobo, I'm using the Intel 6GB/s

Windows 7 is fully capable of handling SSDs and the install process shouldn't be giving you problems, none of which should need extra tinkering like swapping hdds/ports/formatting. It doesn't sound normal. If you had an hdd in the Sata slot the SSD was in then that should be fine.

I'd have a good reason to suspect there's something wrong with the SSD, even though the bios detects it, that's all it seems to be good for it seems.

Id double check your connections first and make sure you're using the primary controller as suggested and perhaps try another Sata cable.

But you ave to also make sure to install the AHCI drivers which for Intel is the Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver.

The other thing you might have to do is load the driver during the install if it is in AHCI mode. Windows 7 might not have the newest driver for the current Intel AHCI. You should be able to select load driver from the install and then throw your MSI motherboard disc in then find the driver in the storage section, depending on how it is laid out.

I'm laughing at myself now. It appears to be working in AHCI mode correctly. The drivers was the trick. Fingers crossed as it installs. Thanks!

Not sure if AHCI driver you installed was directly related to the SSD problem being recognized or what might have happened by loading the storage driver is having windows 7 recognise the 3rd party sata controller on the motherboard if that's where your DVD drive is connected to.

This person found out with your motherboard the DVD drive needed to be on the same Intel Sata controller for Windows 7 to install.

Hello... Yes... you can change Modes ACHI/IDE any time... You can Pre or Post install drivers for your MB and OS to do this... It is a Hardware Communication driver and will NOT affect the DATA on the drive. Also some MB's use different/more than one, Sata port hardware chips and you could need more than one driver when switching between those ports.
Newer Windows versions will have Common hardware ACHI drivers for Driverless install.
