Hi all, I have a bit of a problem...

  • * I have one fully working machine that I am posting this from - running a legal and licensed copy of Windows 7 Pro 64Bit that I have the DVD for.

    * I'm building a new machine and want to install Windows 7 / 10 on this machine.

    * I'll then sell (this) original machine, however I want to keep it operational so I can move data across / keep one fully working machine active in case of issues etc.

    * Also I'm aware Windows 10 will be out very shortly and ultimately I'm going to want to upgrade to that on my new machine.

What is the most straightforward way of making sure I can do all this? I also see that places like Amazon sell Windows 7 unlock keys for much cheaper than the overall software - is it worth getting a second license so that I can unlock Windows 7 on both machines and then upgrade to Windows 10 when I want? Or do I not even need to do that?

1 PC, 1 license
2 PC's, 2 licenses

If you want to sell your existing PC with a Windows license, or keep using it, you cannot keep and use that same license on your new system. Your new system will need its own license.

Windows 10 - This will require a fully upgraded and valid Windows 7 or 8.1 license to upgrade. Or just a new Windows 10 license.
You missed the window on getting the Tech Preview, and continuing to run that after the final release. But that is not an optimal solution for a primary PC anyway.

Either consider a copy of Windows as one of your components in the cost of the new build and buy an OEM license that is not transferable from your new build, buy a full retail license if you plan to transfer it at a future time, or you will be in violation of the licensing terms for your software if you reuse your old Windows 7 license on your new build.

Selling license keys by themselves is not allowed by Microsoft and you can consider those to be suspect, even if you are able to activate them. If your concern is with having a genuinely licensed copy of Windows for your new build, you're going to have to buy a proper license.

You either have to purchase a OEM license key of 7/8/8.1 or you have to run the Windows 10 preview. There have been some conflicting details about whether the preview license will remain viable once the full version is released. Indications are that if you run the preview, they'll let you keep using the license without requiring a key that it was upgraded from.
