Broken Heat Sensor?

Hey!

My CPU temperature seems to go up and down all the time and thus my cooler does it too. Could the heat sensor in my motherboard be broken? I know it's not because of the cooler because I recently got a new one and I've tried installing it again and removing/reapplying the thermal paste.

The temperatures changes like this in a matter of seconds: 37c-40c-37c-38c etc.

Any help would be appreciated!

Solution
Adjust the ramp so the fans ramp up slower.

40 is not going to hurt anything.

If you find the fans to aggressive and can not get them to act nice in Link(I think you can set it and never open Link again), you can connect the fans to your motherboard for control.

As for the temperatures.
Here are mine for reference in a 24c room, but again all cpus are different. I have the H80i with different fans as you can see by my max speed.

Idle full fan speed. Note the small jump when the cpu needs to do something.

Idle auto fan. Similar temperatures and the same spike(the spike can be a short burst of work so are not exactly the same).

All tests show 60...

That kind of temperate fluctuation shouldn't really change what your heatsink is doing, unless you have a really aggressive fan profile.

What CPU do you have? Because that fluctuation would be completely normal with an AMD processor, Intel processors can fluctuate a bit too, but it's not usually rapid fluctuation.

I have an Intel 3930K processor.

With modern processors having very aggressive power savings(AMD and Intel) temperature fluctuations are normal. The cpu idles and has to clock up as needed and these various clock levels all generate different heat. Also on cpu sensors are very fast compared to board based sensors.

The fan however should not react that soon. I did see something similar on an older gigabyte(other boards from them and others never had this issue) board when controlling 3 pin fans, but it was ok with 4 pin fans. Since most cpu coolers have 4 pin fans it should control with very fine control.

If you have fan control options in the bios(most boards do), try another setting if you can.

I changed the setting in BIOS from normal to manual and there seems to be no change. Also, when I set my fans to maximum, the CPU temp doesn't really change from the idle 36'ish range. My cooler is Corsair H100i

There seems to be no definite change when I change the settings in Corsair Link. When I put the fans on max, the idle CPU temp doesn't seem to change at all.

The fans don't get excessively louder expect while the CPU is under stress. I guess I'm just surprised how loud they can be with water cooling and how the CPU is around 40c when idle.

All tests show 60 seconds of data. As you can see the fan does not move because my profile does not do anything until it gets hotter.

Here is an example of how much the cpu clock speed plays in just about 3-4 seconds. It also explains the small spikes in temperature.

Thanks! The CPU temp doesn't seem to rise that much under stress with the graph in use.

Annoying thing about these Corsair water coolers is that the radiators are of poor quality. A thread broke in a H80i that I had previously and the same thing happened with my H100i during installation, so now one of the fans has only 3 screws on it. I guess it really doesn't make a difference.
