diffeence between NAS and FTP file server ?

Solution
You sort of missed my point. What you have will pretty much be a File server. A NAS is like this:

It is just literally storage being attached to a network. With that CPU and setup you will basically make a file server, you can't just make a NAS with it.
Well a NAS is just a box that supports network attachment and a bunch of HDDs. A FTP File Server is normally an entire PC that is dedicated to that task or a VM on a server with other VMs but dedicated to that task.

The benefits of each are different. With a FTP File Server you have a lot more control but a NAS is normally smaller and takes less overall power.

i have a xeon e3 machine that im going to use it as storage server, spec:xeon e3 1220v3 ,intel s1200v3rp board,4gb ecc ram

which is better ? turn it into a NAS server or turn it into a FTP FILE SERVER ?

and power consumption is not an issue

ok i got it now,thanks

Holly molly, never heard that question, so I actually had to think about it a bit... and came to the conclusion as:

NAS for interactive access, you can even stream media from it. One doesn't even have to copy it over to use it. with FTP, I dunno if you can do anything with the data until the file transfer (copy) to your local storage is complete.

I guess depends what are you using it for and never disclosed.

You can do the same with a File Server but still the data has to get to your local system memory. Even with a NAS if you open a docx/xlsx/pptx file it will load the file into your memory until you close it or save it locally.
