RJ45 Laptop to Desktop for Steam In-Home Streaming

Is it possible to utilize Steam's In-Home Streaming service by connecting a laptop directly to a desktop (that's connected to the internet through a broadband stick) with an RJ45 ethernet cable (i.e. not using a gigabit router)?

And a regular ethernet cable should work if one of the computers has gigabit ethernet port.
