Hi all,

I'm in the process of upgrading with a new build and have chosen to go with the Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz CPU.

I'm going to need a fan / air cooler to go with it.

I know Tom's has recently published (today in fact!) a roundup on popular fans here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-cpu-coolers,4181.html

However I'm unsure of which direction to go with. The Noctua fans look a natural choice but seem big! I'm a bit concerned about how much they'll actually weigh when sitting on a motherboard - I know people are using them without issue - but it's a concern. I'd rather go with something a bit smaller.

That said, I don't know how hot the Xeon E3-1231 v3 can get... is it prone to be hotter or cooler than the popular i5 chips?

If anyone who has one - or knows about this kind of thing - could chip in to help me decide, it'd be deeply appreciated.

Solution
It doesnt get very hot at all really, they run fine on the stock cooler, but if you want a better cooler look at the CM Hyper 212 Evo and the Phanteks TC-12DX.

The higher end Noctua stuff would really be overkill.

Great choice on CPU btw.

Thanks! Well the Phanteks seems well thought of in a great number of 'Evo vs Phanteks' posts so that seems the natural choice.

The only other issue is whether it'll fit into my system - I have a couple of Corsair Vengeance Pro ram chips like these - reckon the cooler will allow them to fit in?

The Phanteks TC12DX will fit with the vengeance high profile ram - I have the same ram, and I used to use the phanteks in an earlier build.

Yeah good one. I did a build recently for a friend who used one of these, nice cooler and quiet.

Well that looks like the best bet then... unless there's some compelling reason to go with a Phantek or Noctua alternative, the Shadow Rock Slim does seem to tick the options of being slim, quiet and relatively efficient.

Unless anyone is about to say 'NO! STOP! GET THIS!... ;)

Yeah the only downside is the fitting, but hopefully you will only have to do that once :)

The ShadowRock SLim is because it is slimmer than the normal Shadow Rock LoL
E3-1231V3 is not very demanding in term of cooling. You can basically take any aftermarket fans you like and those recommended above are all good.
So, there is no 'NO! STOP! GET THIS!' :D
