OK so i have very little to zero knowledge about networking. We are currently switching from landlines over to VoIP. Our current setup is Verizon provided internet and modem with wireless and a switch to connect the ~15 computers we have. In order to make the switch to the VoIP the provider has required us to buy a Sonicwall TZ 105s router. My understanding is we could just replace our current switch (D-Link DE5-1024D) with the router however the Sonic Wall doesn't have nearly enough LAN outputs on it to handle the ~15 computers like the Switch does. I am a bit upset but the VoIP provider has offered almost no support in terms of the hardware. How do I need to set this up? Modem > Router > Switch? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You replace the box from Verizon (or set it to bridge mode so it's just a modem, if it includes a modem. Or replace with a dedicated modem) with the Sonicwall.

Your switch connects to one of the LAN ports on the new Sonicwall box.

The sonicwall needs to go between the modem and any other device, including those connected via WiFi.

Ok so if our wifi is now coming from the Verizon modem/router combo. When we set that to bridge or modem only I am assuming we will not have wifi. I will need to purchase the Sonic Wall that has wifi. Is this correct?

So, I'm really unfamiliar with the total setup, but, the way I would attack this is pretty standard and simple.

Get the Modem working with 1 device. Once you know this is working, put the router in. Get 1 device working and 1 phone working. This is just a simple gateway router, it looks, and I since I doubt you're needing to set up any VPN, or have a webserver, etc or doing any specific NAT then you merely will let it stay with most of it's defaults (the router). So, the only thing you will need to make sure of (and I didn't see anything in the documentation for the Sonicwall) that none of the "LAN" ports have any type of BPDU guard. So, basically, what that means is you can connect your current switch (the Dlink) to a LAN port on the Sonicwall and add those as user ports as access ports.

So in short, yes, you should be able to Modem (connect one device to verify you have network/WAN) ---> Router (run the simple install wizard) also ensure one phone works, and one user/internet works. ----> Switch (connect to a LAN / Uplink port).

Also, I see no reason that wireless will not work (even for the phones).

^^ Yup, what he said. You can plug the switch into the Sonicwall router via one of the lan ports (NOT the WAN port)

So the physical setup should be (as far as networking)

Verizon cable modem/router > Sonicwall router on LAN -> 15port switch on LAN -> each computer to LAN.

As for how the rest of your VOIP - you might need to point the Sonicwall router to the right place to get out to the internet if it's necessary - I'm not sure on how your VOIP is physically set up. In the Sonicwall router settings you might need to point it to your internet gateway which is your 'master router' and should be the IP address of your Verizon provided router. You might also need to disable DHCP on the Sonicwall router as it could create confusion as to who is allowed to assign IP addresses to devices that appear.

Here's a whole thing on it.

So you are saying that it's not required to return the current Sonic Wall I have (no wifi) and either return my current Verizon modem/router for just a modem or bridge my modem/router to act as just a modem? I have read having two routers on the same network can cause lots of issues? How would the wifi from the Verizon modem/router be firewalled if the Sonic Wall is not in between it and the modem?

I think it would depend on if your VoIP people want to use the Sonicwall just for the VoIP phones, or put all your equipment through the firewall too.

Looking at the stuff in that link, they're assuming it's connected to the internet directly, so it would need to replace your current router.

I was reading that the sonic wall was being used as a internal device to seperate traffic (not as a modem). If the sonic wall works with Verizon as a modem, use it for the modem as well... so, just go Sonicwall --- switch. (same as the above, remove the modem).

Thanks for clarifying that to me :)

OK I'm a bit lost now. So I called Verizon and they told me that what I have is not a modem/router it's a router only because FIOS is digital and not analog. They said I should be able to plug in the new router and it will work. So what I am assuming is I could return my Verizon router altogether and just use the sonic wall?

There is an ONT and it has an ethernet running from that into the verizon router. So I guess now I will just get the wifi sonic wall and return the router to verizon and be good to go. Thank you so much for your help.

Sorry I misspoke. I do have an ONT but there is a coaxial cable (like a TV type of connection) going from the ONT to the router device (MODEL# A90-9100EM15-10). Then coming out of that router device there is an ethernet cable that is plugged into the switch.

So what do I need to do to insert the Sonic Wall? I would like to remove any other routers from the system altogether and just have the Sonicwall but I know that I cannot plug a coaxial cable into the sonicwall. So is the device I currently have provided by verizon a modem and router combo? Can I just get a modem from Verizon with FIOS?

At that point, you'll have to leave the Verizon device in since it appears to be a cable modem/router combo. Sonicwall router can plug into the LAN port on the Verizon router, switch can plug into the Wall router LAN port, Comptuers can plug into the 15 port switch.

As for configuring it all, is the sonicwall strictly a dedicated VIOP router ONLY? Or does it do general internet routing as well? If so, you can simplify it by disabling the DHCP server on the Verizon router, and let the sonicwall handle all IP assignments. Thats one of the biggest sources of conflicts when it comes to multiple routers (competing DHCP servers).

If the sonicwall router can't handle DHCP for the computers (ie: it only does VIOP devices) that might get a little tricky.
