Hi

I'm currently thinking of upgrading my 6-year old setup:
Asus P6T
i7 920
OCZ 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz Triple Channel CL8 1.65V
WD Raptor 128GB (for the OS)

My main focus right now is on updating my RAM. Given that OCZ no longer manufactures RAM, I have to resort to another brand. My aim is to go for another triple of 3 x 4GB so to sum up to 18GB. I have 3 questions please:

a) In principle, am I allowed to mix brands? Given the scarcity of DDR3 triple channel options in the market (I'm based in the UK), I only seem to have these two options:

G-Skill, 1600Mhz (it's 1600Mhz, even if it says 1333Mhz on amazon), 9-9-9-24:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/G-Skill-DDR3-1333-9-9-9-24-Ripjaws-F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL/dp/B0044YG27I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437694119&sr=8-1&keywords=ddr3+triple+channel

Corsair, 1600Mhz, 9-9-9-24
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9-12GB-Vengeance-Memory/dp/B004CRSM4S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437694249&sr=8-1&keywords=ddr3+vengeance+12gb

b) If the answer to question (a) is "yes", then should I worry much that the above choices do not completely align with my current specs (mainly the CL8 bit)?

c) If all the above are "fine", then should I use the new 3x4GB set in the "main" triple of the mobo (the one currently captured by OCZ) and move the OCZ triple to the "secondary" slots or it doesn't really matter? Which XMP profile to choose by the way?

Many thanks in advance,
nick

ps. the next thing to upgrade would be an SSD in place of the Raptor, but I'm still not convinced for that and this is not the topic of the question anyway.

Solution
Yes that provides a guarantee they will all play nice, you can try mixing (and it can work) but if it doesn't then you face possible return postage, restocking fees (if they evenb give refunds), lost time, etc

Thanks for the information. I guess that the mixing of dram argument partly negates the fact that motherboards are supposed to support a few of pairs or triples (or quadruples), which however can only to be bought separately. That's a physiological point, so no point in answering it :)

Say that I get rid of the OCZ's and buy two exact same packages of 3x4gb (so total 24gb); I don't mint the extra cost - just need to upgrade my system for the better. My interpretation of the dram mixing argument is that even this (2 exact same packages from same vendor) might not work (?). It's confusing, isn't it ;).

Hello. I have a problem with a pc I bought from a friend. The pc has these triple channel ram
http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KHX1600C9AD3_2G.pdf
https://www.memoryc.com/computermemory/ddr3/3gbadataddr31600gpc31280099924gamingseriestriplechannelmemorykit.html

So in total we have 3x1GB + 3x2GB=9GB

My friend told that windows recognized 9GB, but when I got the pc(I reset the bios and format it)
I saw only 6gb on bios. BUT cpu-z reports 9GB

Even worse when I remove the 3x2 modules, I only see 4GB!!!!
