Hi

I just installed a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 in my Asus Essentio CM5570.
I want to get a bit more power out of it so I've decided to overclock it. The only problem is I cant find a way to overclock it in my bios. I've tried to update the bios but the bios updater that Asus gives me wont install. I'm somewhat new to overclocking so I'm not sure how flashing a bios works. Is there a way I can OC without using the bios?

Thanks any help is appreciated

Could you take pictures and show us of your BIOS? Unfortunately there are too many motherboards which use different BIOS setups, so it is hard to tell you exactly what to do.

You are essentially looking that says something like "FSB" "BCLK" "BLK" or similar to increase.

Unfortunately it is hard to say what you could get to overclock with. Those motherboard stopped being produced several years ago, and the only real way to get them is through a used market like Ebay. Best to just look through all the LGA 775 boards one by one, look up their features, make sure they support your CPU, and that they have overclocking support. It will unfortunately be a rather long and slow process.

Honestly, you are probably better off to save up money so you can upgrade to a new system before too long. Those quad-core CPUs still have a good amount of performance, and for general use and web browsing I'm sure they will be useful for many years to come, but they are really behind nowadays when it comes to gaming and more extreme work loads.

I found this motherboard on ebay. It seems to have overlooking features. This computer is for when I have a friend over and we want to do some light gaming. I have a dedicated gaming pc.

Yes that one should be able to overclock. Not exactly cheap, but like I said it can be hard to find boards of this age which can overclock at all. Just tread carefully. The number of power phases on this motherboard is less than optimal, and it could have issues controlling higher voltage flow.

I just want to be able to hit at least 3.4 ghz I found the same board for $15 cheaper.

Thanks

If it works, I'd probably give the cheaper board a try. Its not a ton of money, and 3.4 GHz is probably reachable. What kinda CPU cooler do you have though? The stock one isn't going to cut it, but there are a lot of aftermarket coolers which would get the job done.

I would definitely invest in a new cooler. I just bought this one but it's stock and it was only 10 bucks.
