Why does it play in 720p on my living room tv? Looks 10 times better than on my tv. Standard DVD player
That may be an upconverting DVD player, it can make DVDs look better on an HD screen, but it's physically impossible for a DVD to play at a higher resolution than 720x480. It's not playing at 720p, that may be what your TV is and the player upconverts it to 720. But the DVD itself is not sending out 720 lines, it's sending 480. http://www.cnet.com/news/what-is-upconverting/
Your TV is also likely lower resolution than your monitor which means it spreads the pixels out less when playing a full screen DVD, and the pixel pitch is higher which also makes lower res pictures look better from the distance you sit at when watching a TV.
