Windows media player and VLC Not play in HD

Ive got a gaming rig and just got a new dvd drive and like the old one it will not play in FHD. Ive gone into the settings uninstalled and all that jazz. Ive got a gtx 970 8GB Ram 256 SSD and a 1080 p Monitor that great for gaming. Please help me. Papa wants to watch some movies.

That may be an upconverting DVD player, it can make DVDs look better on an HD screen, but it's physically impossible for a DVD to play at a higher resolution than 720x480. It's not playing at 720p, that may be what your TV is and the player upconverts it to 720. But the DVD itself is not sending out 720 lines, it's sending 480. http://www.cnet.com/news/what-is-upconverting/

Your TV is also likely lower resolution than your monitor which means it spreads the pixels out less when playing a full screen DVD, and the pixel pitch is higher which also makes lower res pictures look better from the distance you sit at when watching...
