Underperforming 980 ti - Reasons?

Dear all

Yesterday i`ve exchanged my old titan (6gb) with an msi gtx 980 ti gaming 6g due to the fact that i did not want to miss the latest tech improvements by the industry and it was a hard time watching my titan suffer with the fps in the latest games.

The thing is now that in the short time yesterday evening when in tested it a bit out that is saw the fps in gta 5 dropping from steady 60 in town to 37 when driving into the land-side.

sideinfo: i was not able to push the pci e leaver fully back down due to the gpu being to big. according to a friend working in it that shouldnt be a problem since no fractals, anomalies were shown so far why gaming/benching.

Is this to be expected or can this relate to some sort of hardware problem?

i am using :
Asus P8Z77-V LX
i7 3770
16 gb of ddr3 ram (2x8gb)
ssd 250gb for OS
3tb standard hd for rest

Could the cpu be causing the bottleneck and if so what cpu upgrade would be possible (due to mobo being slightly getting old) or recommended regarding the mobo.

Thank you all in advance

Kind regards

elldaimo

Solution
hello folks

i ve fiddled arround with gta5`s graphics settings and compared it to other games as crysis 3 as an example what was running at 60 fps constant on 1080p. where gta 5 behaves pretty wierd. my titan could handle almost all maxed, except AA and keep steady 55-60 fps in town but was dropping in low 40`s till even down to 37. After fiddling arround ; grass ! ; i could enjoy it singleplayer but for online it had to go down even a bit further.

Now with the msi 980ti gaming 6g it was running pretty solid 60`s on small spaces and interiors but in town when driving and when in the country side it dropped to 46 and was at points going down just by looking at walls. All on 1080p.

Just 5 min ago i tried 2500x1600 or so and that gave...

While I am not sure if this might be the reason, I have heard of GTX 980Ti's not working at all on certain motherboards for the i7 2600k. Perhaps your motherboard could be the cause of this problem? I wouldn't think the 3770 would bottleneck the GPU. Also what is your current power supply? If you were running an Old Titan it should be fine, but I'd like to know just so I have the full story.

Would that really lower the performance to what he is experiencing? I for a while had forgotten I had the Nvidia drivers still installed after installing AMD's drivers for the 7870 and it still performed great.

Drivers are a real odd thing. Many times you can just pop in the new board and all is fine. Sometimes you have to delete the old driver, even when it is the same manufacturer. The motherboard firmware could be the problem.

To be honest i didnt delete nvidia experience before i swapped the cards, but there was no detection issue of the gpu at all, i mean nvidia gives out the same drives for all the cards so the latest nvidia driver was already installed.

psu is a 750w corsair if i remember right.

all drivers should be up to date at least that is what my system tells me

could it be that my mobo cant really handle the gpu? background checks i did sounded like the mobo should handle that gpu easily

i`ll be retesting it today after a proper cleaning and reinstalling of the drivers.

another question that i forgot to ask before: what is the reason that in crysis 3 my fps get capped at 60fps? does my system realize that the monitor only gives out 60mzh and cuts em to 60 fps? because in others it tends to go over 140fps (makes no sense on a monitor like this i know).

Well in certain games the FPS is capped. For example, Titanfall's fps is capped at 60.

Conclusion...drivers, due to higher clockspeed or whatever it seems to underperform in gta 5 especially in normal hd resolution compared to higher ones.

(sry i got no clue of how pc hardware works, barely nowing what does what)

the 3770 really shouldnt be bottlenecking if its working correctly.

Can you check you CPU temps in case the cpu cooler was disturbed when installing the 980 ti? Often thermal throttling is the cause of these problems.

it goes up to 60°C when on max performance.

Well hello again

I couldn`t post this yesterday because it was getting to late but one question i would like to ask the community is if someone could tell me any reason why my system gets 5592 score in the valley benchmark when a reference 980 ti gets 5900?
Considering this paired with the earlier on described issues in gta 5 would you guys in my situation trying to hand the gpu back in in order to get a new one as replacement or could those issues be driver related?

best wishes & regards

Been seeing a few people having issues with MSI cards and a few of them had issues with certain settings in the software that came with MSI or something that had to do with their software, not afterburner but whatever else it is they provide. Not sure if you are using that or not but worth a try to uninstall it if you are and try with afterburner alone and make sure to turn your power limiter up to 110% if you haven't already, even if you aren't overclocked.

Thanks for the hint' I ll try this after work! Its called msiapp where you can chose between oc mode/gaming mode/ silent mode
Afterburner was only used to have a second monitoring tool besides HWinfo

No problem...what were your settings in valley? 1080P with aa on or off?

extreme without aa , 1080p

Somethings definitely wrong there, I just got 6300 without aa, all ultra 1080P so probably 5900 at base speeds probably. Give that a try, hopefully that will work, if not hopefully you can get it resolved quickly. Those that had issues with that msi app had subpar performance too....it could be other things, but worth a try. Let us know if it did anything.

well thats a bummer! but dont you think that my cpu and mobo could be holding my gpu back? anyways i ll try it after work without msiapp etc. and if that wont resolve it i will might try to hand it back in and get a new one instead.

thanks for the help so far.

Yeah, there could be a couple different things, just thought since a few others had problems specifically with msi, to try that first but yeah cpu could be holding it back, cpu temps could cause it to throttle which could affect gpu usage but your temps look fine...gpu could be throttling due to heat but I doubt that, you'd notice if it was running hot.

Your psu could be holding it back if it's old but I think I saw you said 750 watts and corsair, what series ? If you were running titan before though, it should be fine. What's your gpu usage while gaming? Also try running firestrike 1.1 when you get a chance and post a link to the results page here too. And any hw info screenshots you may have for a gaming session or benchmark session.

EDIT: Also, what's your cpu usage while gaming?

The cpu is working at max in most games but not surpassing 60°C as well as the GPU goes up do 74°C but i am not sure about the usage.

If from installing something would have broken, by touching mobo etc where it shouldnt be touched the problems would be probably way more critical or not?

If the cpu is maxing out or getting close to max like that and your gpu usage is quite a bit below 99%, it could mean the cpu is bottlenecking the card but GTA V is a messed up game anyways and I don't think I would base it off of that game alone. The 3770 is a pretty strong processor still and I would do more comparing to other games on it.

What settings do you have on? This vid is 1080P with all ultra, advanced settings all high and msaa is 8x. FPS is 50-60 in the city. His cpu usage is pretty high in that game, even with a 5820K...GTA V is just not optimized well at all.

the bottleneck will come from the processor and mobo. GTX 980TI runs on PCIE 3.0. although it will run 2.0 it will not perform at its max speeds. Also they run best on i7 47xx series and 59xx series. with z97 or z99 mobo.
This is what this card is built for. although your CPU and mobo are still pretty good running maxwell GPU on them will stop this card from its true potential.
The older Kepler architect TITAN was a beast of its day. but wouldnt have bottlenecked on that setup. I would advise to max your performance upgrade CPU and GPU.

Happy Hunting

Well the mobo has PCI E 3.0 at least this is given. Would oc`ing the cpu help in anyway?
In the end that means grab some cash and make a total gear-upgrade, somehow i hoped that only a gpu update
would do it after 2years.
But thank you again for the help and information, so it seems to be as i thought in the first place.
