Hello,
i have one long cable and i want to connect two computers to have internet, what cheap devices to i need to connect them? I have a linksys router can i do it as well?
If you see the picture the right cable connects to the router and the left cable connects to the pc. The idea is to have 2 ethernet outputs for the pc.

You have the venerable WRT54G, wow, that's an old router. I bought my first one back in like 2002 or 2003.

Very simple to use. Plug an ethernet cable from the modem into the yellow ethernet port. Then plug your computers into any of the blue ethernet ports.

Everything should just work out of the box. After you get it all up and working, you may want to go into the web interface and set up the wireless, or at least change the password, or turn the wireless off. This way neighbors can't hop on an hijack your internet connection.
if there next to each other then use a network switch from the main ethernet cable.
if the pc are in the same room and the wall outlet for the ethernet on the other side. you can use a wireless router and two usb dongles.

another part that a little most costly is power over Ethernet kits.

Maybe I am misunderstanding something here. To connect both computers to the internet, you would connect both of them to the router. The router is connected to the modem. This way both computers have internet access, and can talk to each other as well. To be more techinical the modem is connected to the WAN side connector on your Linksys router, and each of your computers will connect to one of the LAN side connectors on the Linksys router. WAN stands for Wide Area Network, LAN stands for Local Area Network.

Yes, username is blank and password is admin.

Don't leave it like this. Set up your own password. A lot of people are familiar with these routers, so if you leave the default password and username, then it could get hijacked if someone is on your network.

There are many hardware versions of this router (6 I think), have a look at the bottom of the router. There will be a sticker and it will say WRT54GvX where is is the hardware version. Then I can provide you with the correct firmware. Also do you live in North America? North American routers have different firmware than everywhere else since they only go to channel 11, where everywhere else goes to 15 if I remember correctly. It's a legislated thing, so you don't want to be broadcasting above channel 11 if you live in US, Canada, or Mexico (I think).

I live in Cyprus (Europe) and i use channel 11 give me a link to download the coorect firmware. By the way, do this router emit radiation? because its in my bedroom and i know it is not good for people health.

Here is the link to the main support page or that router. I used the Greek site, however the firmware should be the same no matter which European site you use. Please make sure the router pictured looks like yours:

WRT54G2 Support Page

It's showing the latest version of firmware is 4.21.5. You can check that in the router configuration web page. If you already have that version, then you don't need to upgrade.
