Windows 7 or 8.1?

Solution
With Windows 10 coming out next week. Windows 10 is also coming with DirectX 12 which will make games awesome. Also you get both the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 with Windows 10. With all that and with you getting a free upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 just buy which ever is cheaper and upgrade from there.
People dislike 8.1 because it is different from 7 and XP.

It runs games better than windows 7 due to differences in resource use/allocation.

8.1 becomes really easy to use if you understand that you can get to your settings and programs easily by simply typing the name of a program or setting and clicking on it from the list of results that shows or by simply clicking the down arrow on the start screen to see an alphabetical list of your programs. Also, you can boot directly to the desktop if you so desire for a Win 7-like experience.

Windows 8 is actually much better than Windows 7 and only takes a week of use to really get used to.

People dislike 8 and 8.1 because of the GUI since win8 was made for being used for multi-platform (pc and touch).
I just think people being picky about it, since i dont see how it hurt to have bigger icons, if its such a problem its just to make them smaller.

Win 8.1. People are scared of changes as ubercake mentioned although I can admit that 8.1 is far from perfect. Nonetheless we all will get a free update to Win 10 and that OS looks like a very good successor.

From what I understand, there should be no real difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 in gaming. You may run into a few driver or compatibility problems with Windows 8.1, but there are usually fixes for those. There's no performance boost with Win8.1.

Windows 8.1 was very polarizing for a couple of main reasons. The first, is the huge departure from the classic Windows start button. Many people hated this. Second, Windows 8.1 has a lot of ways to do more than one thing. The new UI was confusing for people and often didn't make sense.

Personally, I prefer Windows 8.1 to Windows 7. Windows 7 is still one of the best operating systems, I just feel Windows 8.1 makes more sense.

This really is the best advice.

It depends on what you are used to. I don't think there is any performance increase in win 8 in games. I personally would wait for win 10 as this is coming out next week which I can't wait for as this will be free for win 7 and 8 users. Then if you don't like it you can always go back to win 7 or 8 depending on your preference.
