Hello
I am a computer science student and i want to buy a new laptop which could give me better performance and gaming experience.

My question is that:
There is an option for me in 2 laptops with almost same configrations ( i.e. Intel i5 processor,8 gb ram etc. ). The only diffence between them is that one is having a 720p display with nvidia geforce 840m 2 gb graphic card while other is having 1080p display and nvidia geforce 940m 2 gb graphic card.
Since there is not very much difference in the 2 cards (as seems on internet). Im afraid that 940m with 1080p will not perform better than 840m with 720p.

Pls consider better gaming experience, video editing (in after effects), and battery life.
Thanks in advance.

I would go with the the laptop with the gt 840m as it will make it easier for your laptop to handle games. This is if you play a lot. If on the other hand you play occasionally then the 940m is better as this can make a difference while coding as you don't have to scroll all the time to read your code. This is also true for video editing assuming you are not doing anything intense as the increase in res will allow you to see more of the icons and menus better than the 720p.

1080p will look better but 720p will be easier on the system. Gaming experience, it depends 100% on the games (some are very easy to play at 1080p), video editing should be fine with either, battery life will never be good on any laptop when doing intensive tasks. Is there a specific reason you want to do your gaming and video editing on a laptop? Building a desktop for those things would be much more cost-effective and a better experience overall.

I'm not an expert especially when it comes to laptops but my personal opinion would be that its better to get the later model. Its has more computing power compared to the older gen. I don't know the exact models of the GPUs you are looking at but doing a quick search in Google shows that the 940m is a lot more capable than the 840m. If you play games, consider that you may come across a game that the 940m can run on very low settings, which would give a big probability that the 840m would struggle to run it.

One usual drawback to bigger resolution and more powerful card is that it usually consumes more power. It will depend on your preference if you'd rather have a laptop that'll last longer on a charge but give average perform, or have a laptop that can perform better for a shorter time.

Again this is just my opinion so I hope I don't upset anyone out there who may have a different opinion. LOL

thanks for your reply.
well i want a laptop that can play games like call of duty black ops or nfs:hot pursuit just for fun.and i want this in a laptop.
so basically i wanted to know that will the lower model of graphic card(geforce 840m) on a lower resolution perform better than a higher model of graphic card (940m) with a higher resolution display in all aspects such as gaming, coding(coding dont need big gpahic card i guess), video editing , and video streaming etc.
which one would you chose?
or if you have any suggestion for another laptop around $850.
