Network Computer Management via remote connections

I am in a new position at my job. Most of the network management is handled by another individual, but I'm working on filling his space as he transitions out. I have an admin level login, so I can access any computer on our network.

What I would like to do is be able to access a users computer in their office from my workstation. (Let's say I need to add a printer and set the printer settings). I know I can use VNC or RDC to take over their computer and do it remotely, but I would like to be able to manage their computer without disturbing their workflow.

I've been using Spiceworks to get info from our network computers (via my admin login), but I want to be able to manage the computers and their settings. Can this be done?

For obvious reasons you stated, I would not be doing anything major during work hours. One of the biggest tasks i would like to do is scheduling maintenance, like defrag or chdsk on next boot (other than our regularly scheduled maintenance). Instead of having to make a trip over or interrupt their session, I would like to be able to schedule maintenance tasks remotely.

Based on my current situation, what would anyone recommend I do?

Sorry for the delayed response. Some things just needed priority.
Its a Windows 7 Professional environment on a local domain. Yes, there is an AD

I wouldn't be worried about scheduling defrag or chkdsk or things like that. Also if a user needs a printer added or needs you to do something remotely for them I like to email them and ask them to tell me when there computer will be free for half an hour or so (depending on the task.) Normally I find that they make time right away rather than work haha!

I actually just came across some really good software called DameWare Remote Support. It has a slew of remote features. I can view and edit files, printers, registry, command prompt, processes, schedule job tasks, etc. It really has a lot to offer. And its really inexpensive. So far its working great.
