Is two gtx 980 ti's and 4790k a waste if i use only a 1440p monitor?
If so should i get three cheap 1080p monitors or one 1440 and one cheap 4k monitor.

Depends on the title and settings. There are a few game engines out there that a 980Ti will have issues maintaining 144fps at 2560x1440.

I would start with what it is you are wanting to play and start looking at benchmarks for a single 980Ti.

Is this a prospective build?
Post your parts list.

Decide what resolution you want to game on.
A single GTX980ti will game on a single 1440P monitor very well.
If , for some reason, you think you need more graphics capability, adding a second is an option.

Triple monitor gaming might well need a second card. But, there are not that many triple monitor enabled games.

For 4k gaming, a single GTX980ti may well be sufficient, it depends on the game.
For fast action games, a second would be very good.

Look carefully at any "cheap" 4k monitor.
Some will not support 60 hz with full color.

Having a second side monitor adds little load while gaming. it is a nice addition.

I am not at all sure where I got that from to be honest. Good thing it is Friday...

As one that has 980 Ti and a 2560 X 1600 monitor in some areas in WoW I can see as low as 25 fps on Ultra quality. I can't say this game is hugely optimized but when you get into area's with a lot of moving trees it sure can cripple a single 980 Ti on almost the same system he has.

Heh. Don't worry, I've done much worse. Much worse. Especially when it's near bedtime.
