Hey, community!

I've been reading threads in which people claim any GTX 980 card is overkill with 1080p displays.

Fine. Let's assume that's right.
Now, what if someone like me (who has relatively weak financial power and no room for error, has been saving for two years and finally has the money to even buy a 980ti) wanted to do some future proofing INSTEAD of getting something that is JUST ENOUGH?

I'm decided on ASRock Z97 extreme 6, Core i7 4790K and 16GB of RAM, while I already have a 1080p ASUS VG248QE monitor that runs at 144mhz which I ain't changing.

Will the best GTX 970 on the market guarantee Ultra settings in heavy games for 5-6 years? Or should I look to some juggernaut like ASUS 980 Matrix Platinum? I'm no cheap bastard, and in spite of my not so full bank account, I'm willing to shell out as much as it takes on a revving rig that drags me for a very long time.

Please note that I can do this only once every 5 or so years, so, help this friend of yours with that in mind.

Thanx!

Solution
If you want close to 5 years not even a 980. I would at minimum say a 980Ti would be the best bet because it is about 20% faster than a 980 and has 50% more VRAM (6GB vs 4GB).

@Jimmysmitty

I know I can't do Ultra for 5 years, but do consider that my monitor isn't getting any stronger, so I'm hoping for something that gets old with me and goes out on a relative high. If my monitor were 4K, I'd have to get a new rig with Titan Z or something.
What GPU, then, would you recommend having pointed that logical point?

The 970 cant max some games at 1080p 60fps right now so no definitely not 5-6 years. The 980 maxtix is for people who like to spend a lot of money for a tiny bit of extra performance, just get a normal 980 and overclock it. But i doubt a 980 will be maxing out games 5 years from now i doubt even a titan x would.

A 970 would probably be decent for 2-3 years before it started to not be able to do high - ultra settings, however, nothing can really be "Future Proof", that would be like using a 480, which while it was a good card when it was released, it is not running games maxed out.

You'd need at least a single 980 ti. At least. 2 If you want to play games for more than 2-3 years [though only time will tell how well that goes in games in the future. we're making leaps and bounds in all tech, so no idea what even 2 years is really going to look like]. I got a pair of 780 classified cards that can still play games like the Witcher 3 at ultra at 65-80 fps, so if you overclock well, and do a bit of research you can probably make a gpu investment last 2-3 years, if you're lucky in the silicon lottery.

Dont spend extra on one of those expensive 980s i hate those things, the normal 980s like the msi gaming, gigabyte gaming, asus strix, are very good and will easily match or surpass the performance of the high end 980s if you just overclok them a bit.

On a side note, which of the 980 brands offers the best supporting software?
Based on my extensive research, the controlling software matters a great deal as, e.g. it pushes a 970 to perform better than a 980.

I hear Zotac's is terrible, and MSI's is real good.
Any experiences, anecdotes, inside Intel on this?

What like msi afterburner for overclocking? All that stuff is free and you can get it online. MSI afterburner is my personal favorite and it will work with any card brand zotac, asus, evga etc. That software is not specific to the brand.

A question on topic, what is a better choice for someone that wants 60 fps@1080 p even if he must turn down some graphic settings for 2-3 years, a 970 and upgrade when it can't get 60 fps even in lowest settings and save the money for the next 970 equivalent or spend double the money and get a 980 ti hoping it will last longer?

..Just buy a 980 ti if you want to have something that lasts. A 980 ti will performed around 40-50% better than a 980.

I would get EVGA 980 ti Classified, or Asus Strix.
