Hello friends,

My 600W PSU broke recently and i need to buy a new one. While i was looking for a new PSU, i thought... why not buy one that is more powerful... that way i can upgrade my graphics card. But i am stuck and i do not know which power supply to choose.

My old PC hardware:
MB intel dx58so
i7 920 @2.67ghz
12 gB ram (3 dimms)
AMD Radeon HD 6970
1 Sandisk 240gb ssd
1 WD Black 7200rpm hdd
1 sd card reader + 4 usb ports
AcePower 600w PSU (like this one)

Hardware upgrade:
I would upgrade my hd 6970 cuz its very noisy to a gtx 780

Would a 600w power supply be enough or i would need to get a better PSU?

Solution

With your sys specs 550W would be enough, but 650 is recommended for ample headroom if you plan on expanding your rig

Refer for 650:

As for GTX 780: XiPH3R have giving you some nice recommendation for r9 390 or a gtx 970, they will work well with your current system: +1 for that.

Having said that, if you have made up your mind to in the domain of GTX 780, i believe...

the gtx 780 is preety old now. better buy the r9 390 or a gtx 970.
for the psu buy the corsair cs 750. its cheap and has ample wattage to support a gtx 970 sli and probably a r9 290/390 crossfire.
or better buy the rm 850 for future proofing

Unless you're going to SLI or Crossfire, 600 should be plenty. I agree with the above recommendation in terms of video cards, but you should be able to do better than the CS series.

Check here http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.htm
Pick something off the tier 1 or 2 list and you should be able to decrease the chance of you PSU dying again. You should also be able to port it into your next build.

Having said that, if you have made up your mind to in the domain of GTX 780, i believe it will deliver just enough( much much over your 6970)

But GTX 970 will almost half power than 780 with 20-35 % performance gain in various games.

If all-out performance is the primary concern, however, there can only be one winner: r9 390 edges ahead where it matters, delivering smoother frame rates at higher resolutions

[Update] - Choose 650W if going for 780 :) - [there is head room included]

I thought the purpose of a thread was to get answers on the question that was asked in the title and in the first post.

Personally, if i was looking for answers to my questions about GPU volume levels, i wouldnt go read a thread entitled "Help me choose a PSU". And i also think i will have more appropriate answers if i post a GPU question under the "Graphics Cards" category rather than the "Components" one.
