A few days ago I experienced this problem and I fixed it by downloading CCleaner and running a registry scan. A few minutes ago I was playing a game and my pc done it again. I do not get a drop in FPS or anything but my pc will just go to a black screen and the fans go into warp drive. It will then turn off and stay off for about 2 seconds then start back up and ask me about the safe mode stuff and whatnot. I startup as I normally would and I can run Google Chrome of course or else I wouldn't be typing this right now. Also when my PC starts back up I do not get any Windows saying that it didn't shut down correctly. I did however go to Event Viewer and look for the event that happened roughly before my PC crashed. and I found this:
Error: Source: WMI Event: ID 10 Task category: None

General: Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

I don't know what really could be the problem. I use an Nvidia Geforce 660. I thank anyone who replies a whole lot. If you need anymore info please ask me.

(2) The GPU will indeed work without the drivers. The windows resolution and refresh might temporarily be lower, but don't worry, it will return back to normal when you follow my procedure and reinstall. It'll be fine. Also, when you install the drivers, you are given the option of installing just the drivers or the whole GeForce experience. You might have to select custom install. You're doing great.

Running CCleaner temporarily fixed the problem but now it is back for more. I have an Alienware X51 and about a year after I bought it I had to have the graphics card replaced because it was faulty. This graphics card is roughly 3 years old and I think it is the source of my problems. When my PC crashed the sounds and stuff keep going for about 3 seconds then they drag for 1 or 2 then my PC restarts. As of now Malware-Bytes is hard at work scanning for any viruses that could be on the loose.

The other day when the problem happened it occured on both games that I started. I don't really want to try more as I'm afraid it could cause more damage unless it would be ok.

Also to note the other day it crashed about 5 minutes into a youtube video

Okay. You're the person in front of the computer, so if you think it's possibly an infection, let's start there. Here is my first recommendation:

(1) stop malwarebytes. It only scans for malware, not trojans or virus.
(2) download and run: ADWcleaner and Combofix, in that order. Both of these programs will reboot your computer. ADWcleaner will take about 5 minutes to run and Combofix will take about 15-30 minutes. These programs will most likely reboot your computer, so you'll first need to save all your open work and save your browser tabs. Reply to this thread to acknowledge if and when you're starting this process. You can log into this Tom's hardware thread from your cell phone in a pinch.

I ran Combofix and this is the log it gave me: http://pastebin.com/BZpx9TTx
I used pastebin because it is fairly big. Also while I was skimming through this was at the top and looked to be something that could have been causing problems: Infected copy of c:\windows\SysWow64\Version.dll was found and disinfected. I didn't run ADWcleaner yet. I also haven't tried playing any games. Should I try or wait?

I tried palying another game a few minutes ago and it worked fine for about 2-3 minutes and when I tried to load into a battle I assume during map loading that's when it crashed.

Okay. Now, uninstall the video drivers with this method:

Uninstall drivers with DDU (display drivers uninstaller).
Reboot.
Reinstall drivers only from website; don't install Geforce experience though. Just the drivers.
Reboot.

Now play and see if the problem re-occurs.

And please don't be discouraged. If anything I'm encouraged because now we know that it wasn't an infection making your system unstable, and that's comforting to know. Now after you finish this next step, we'll know if drivers are the problem or not. If not then we'll go through a few quick steps to make sure it isn't heating baking your Northgate bridge or some other component. Let me know as soon as you finish.

http://pastebin.com/gzhayMsb There is the other scan. It looked like to me it found some things. Also I will make sure to keep Geforce Experience out but I think it came with the driver. I have a few questions as well.
1. Where is the display drivers uninstaller?
2. How does the GPU work without the drivers?
3. How do I know whether I'm using 660 or 660 ti?

OH YES I FORGOT TO TELL YOU! A few minutes ago Speedfan indicated a running temperature of 160*F. Although it has always ran at this temperature and higher. I think it might just be the X51 though where it is so tightly packed inside the little case.

Yes I have updated this like 8 quadrillion times now but I found a thingy of my pc specs

It is like an XML Internet Explorer thingy that I cant copy/paste. Maybe that will help you some
