After working with a cable one tech on the phone, I still had only a 30-32mbps download speed.i've run speedtest, testmy, xfinity and speakeasy speed tests and they all have me in the 30mbps range. I have one pc, win7 and it is hard wired to a single cable; no router or wireless. After pinging and power cycling the modem, trying another browser, turning off Avast and other things, it's still slow. The last thing i was told was to try another ethernet cable. It can't be that, can it? I did a windows troubleshooter on the pc's network adapter and it showed no issues and i set my windows firewall to default settings. I suspect i'm being throttled but cable one will not say.....any ideas? thanks

Yup. Optic cable bandwidth is shared, just like mobile data. DSL use their own individual line, so speeds should be constant.

Options:
-Unless your ISP guarantees you a certain speed, there might not be much you can do. My ISP claims speeds up to 24mbs. At work we get 10, at home I get 5.
-If you are throttled can you wait to see if it changes at the start of your next billing month?
-In AUS we have an industry ombudsman where you can make a complaint and they investigate. It's a good option if you KNOW they are screwing you.

I'm guessing you have residential Cable One service like me. If there is heavy traffic, speeds will suffer if there isn't enough bandwidth allocated in your area - which shouldn't be the case, but it can happen. If that is the case, try doing a speed test very late at night or very early in the morning to see what you get. If you are still getting only 30, then call them back up and get a tech out to check your house / neighborhood lines.

Also, the best speed test to use is the one located at https://myaccount.cableone.net/MySpeedTest.aspx

That should be the speed test to your main hub, and if that is slow then it is 100% certain that it's a cable one issue.

Yep, i'm residential John and for a good while, i couldn't get to the cableone site....page load errors, but this morning no problem. their speed test showed 34ish which is what 'testmy.net' showed. I hope you're right that it's the cable co. i'm arranging for a house call now!
Thanks mrmez; you gave me an interesting thought.....i dont know if they 'guarantee' me 50mbps; i just know that since i got my docesis3 modem i've been getting 50 consistently......let me go ahead and make for that trouble call......thanks!
