MSI nvidia 970 stuck at 540 mhz even when games are running

Hi I'm a novice at tech savvy stuff so please make it so a dummy like me could understand. I recently purchased the MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card and after messing around a bit it was great but the next day the gaming app said it was running at 540 mhz a lot less than when I first installed it and now it won't change no matter what. please anyone help is this a problem?

Go to NVIDIA 3D SETTING > POWER MANAGEMENT > change from ADAPTIVE TO MAXIMUM.
and after that while playing games.. check if its reaching its Maximum clock.
