Hello

After a few years of using laptops, a few weeks ago I thought building a nice and small desktop machine.

I bought the following components:

8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3, PC3-10600 (1333), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, 1.50V
520W Antec High Current Gamer Hybrid Modular, 80PLUS Bronze, 135mm Quiet Fan, ATX PSU
Noctua NH-L9i Low Profile Quiet CPU Cooler, Intel LGA1150/1155/1156
256GB SanDisk X110
Antec ISK600 mini-ITX Gaming Black Case w/o PSU
MSI Z97I AC, Intel Z97, S 1150, DDR3, SATA III 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, PCIe 3.0 (x16), DP/DVI/HDMI, Mini ITX
2GB MSI GTX 750 Ti OC, 28nm, PCIe 3.0 (x16), 5400MHz GDDR5, GPU 1069MHz, Boost 1137MHz, Cores 640, VGA/DVI/HDMI
Intel Core i3 4170, LGA 1150, Haswell, Dual Core, 3.7GHz, 5 GT/s DMI, 1150MHz GPU, 37x Ratio, 54W, CPU, Retail

I assembled the whole thing and when I pressed the power button absolutely nothing happened. No fans turned on, no beeps, no noise, no black smoke. I tested the PSU and it worked, I tried shorting the power switch jumper to start the PC without using the case power button... and nothing.

After a first round of troubleshooting with customer services I sent back the motherboard, which was replaced under the terms of insurance I got when I bought the components. (£20 saved me £75). They told me that some pins of the CPU slot were bent and the motherboard needed replacing.

The new motherboard came back so I took extra care when I push the CPU lever down. Same result - no power up.
Motherboard was sent back, this time along with the CPU, power supply and memory. I thought that maybe I had ruined some of these components when the first motherboard was damaged.and they replied that there was 1 bent pin. My insurance was a 1 time only, so they offered to try straightening the pin. Then all components were tested OK..

Today I got my components back, and tested only the motherboard and CPU and fan outside of the case. I was pleased to see for the first time the CPU fan starting up.The screen lit up and BIOS prompt showed up. nice. I switched it off and put all the components in the case to finally use my new PC.

Turned it on again and... nothing. Same as when the CPU pins had been bent. no fans, no power, nothing.

Any thoughts on what may have happened between using the motherboard on the desk and inside its case? Any solutions?

I haven't checked yet if the CPU slot has bent pins again. I just put everything away and will probably go to a shop to have them test everything and assemble the machine. Not as economic and exciting as I first thought but will have to do :(

Unfortunately I don't have nor know anyone nearby who has spare parts I could swap in and out until I find the faulty component.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks @Someone Somewhere.

The guide might be the same that Scan.co.uk customer service use when I call them.

I checked all the items on the list... I don't think I can go any further without having a different motherboard to test.

I took a photo of the CPU socket and I think that this time the pins are OK.
