hi to all

My PC specs are
990fxa msi motherboard
amd fx 6300 CPU running older stock cooler with heat pipes
Kingston HX316C10FRK2/8 8GB dual channel 1600 ram
corsair rm 750 psu
Nvidia gt 740 sc edition
corsair 750D case
1tb wd black hdd running windows 8.1 64bit

this is a new system only about a week old, fresh install aswell.

i basically want to overclock my cpu to around 4.2 and then higher once i get my H100i GTX cooler and overclock my ram, its kind of slow at loading startup apps. 4.2 is fine at the moment, i kind of knw how to do it in the bios but i get confused with raising the CPU/NB multiplier and voltage and same with the ram. cpu z shows that my ram timings are 10 10 10 30.

if i have missed anything i apologize i will confirm whatever you need me to.

I'd disable turbo, set your CPU ratio to like 4Ghz to start with (20 ratio), then start trying to find its max. Then try to turn up your HT Link speed as much as possible (might have to go one or two notches lower to get stable). Somewhere around 2400 to 2600mhz is a good goal.

Also, turn auto voltage off and put it no higher than 1.475V (probably only 1.3V to start, raise as needed). Might also want to set the CPU-NB to like 2200 or 2400mhz (higher is better, but it's not a big deal).

Are you sure the voltage only goes up by 0.1 at a time? Try pressing the actual +- keys on your keyboard to raise/lower it.

You don't really need to change anything in that second picture, unless you want it to always be running max speed regardless of...

Thank you for the quick reply I haven't actually seen that D.O.C.P mode but If I change my ram speed from 1600 to 1866 and change some multipliers n voltage would that be a over clock?

the only thing i knw is that i cannot go over 1.5 volts, but the data sheet to me does not tell me what timings to input, and thank you for the first link you sent regarding overclocking, do i overclock the cpu first then the ram or both at the same time.

by the way i can build pcs but confused about overclocking lol which is so annoying.

I would focus more on the CPU overclock. The RAM overclock will have less tangible benefits, and potentially throw your CPU overclock off. Honestly I usually just recommend setting XMP, but I understand the feels of wanting to OC.

Here's a guide http://www.techradar.com/us/news/computing-components/upgrades/how-to-overclock-ddr3-ram-719466 Just note, you can technically go much higher than 1.5V, it's just not recommended to exceed 1.575V (some RAM comes at 1.65V though).

thanks again. that link looks good, i will try to overclock my cpu the best i can obviously with ur advice, i did however see a video by jayztwocents i was going to copy his values. what do you think. as long as my temps are ok and my apps open quicker than now i will be happy.

Just like how every CPU overclock is different, the RAM can't be copied either. From the spec sheet of your RAM, it does have a max recommended voltage of 1.575V, so you can safely bump up to that and start OCing.

Most likely you can get the speeds to somewhere around 1866-2133, and CAS latency around 8 (technically it can go as low as 6 on your sticks). Your CAS will be harder to get lower the higher the speed though. For example, if you're at 2133 you'll probably have a CAS around 9 to 11.

If I were you, I'd keep it at 1600 and try to get the CAS as low as possible, then try raising the speed. A CAS of 6 would be "ideal," and out-perform the higher speed with slower CAS.

so basically leave it at 1600 increase voltage to either 1.575 or 1.5 and just decrease the first one (cas) by 1 then do memtest once its not stable revert back to the most stable one. do i do the same for the others or leave them. oh and once i do that if i change it from 1600 or 1866 will i notice a change

You don't really need to change anything in that second picture, unless you want it to always be running max speed regardless of load. Otherwise leave it on defaults.
