What do you think some of the advantages and disadvantages are of having a NIC built into the motherboard of a computing device instead of as an add-on computer?

If you mean add-on card, there's basically none.

Onboard NICs are usually just as fast as the add-in cards (until you start looking at 10GbE cards), and take up less room.

Only real reason for add-in NICs is if you want multiple NICs, or you need 10G ethernet.
