I am building myself a new gaming rig that will have a GTX 980 Ti and an i7 4790k stock clocked at 4.0ghz. I have an ASUS VG248QE 1080p 144hz gaming monitor. Will the GTX 980 Ti bottleneck the 4790K at 1080p?

Here are the rest of my system specs:
Case: Corsair 350d
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII Gene
RAM: 16gb Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133mhz
CPU: i7 4790K 4.0ghz
GPU: GTX 980 Ti (Reference)
Liquid Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H75
Hard Drive: Seagate 2 TB
OS: Windows 8.1

Solution

Maybe, but that has nothing to do with the i7.
That just means you're not using the GPU (or CPU) to its fullest potential.

Not at all, read the Bottlenecking Guide on the bottom right for a detailed explanation.

A very high exaggeration.

1. CPU has nothing to do with this
2. The Monitor is definitly limiting it's full potential, however if you use Nvidia's option that lets you run 4K in a 1080P monitor, you should not be limited at all and will see excellent performance.

You have a Ferrari (CPU), with the best available racing tires (GPU). Currently, you use it to go down to the store (1080p).
Later, when you get a better or more monitors, you can take it out on the track and open it up.

When you say the monitor is limiting its full potential, do you mean that 980 Ti could perform good on better resolutions?

But I can still get high fps in most games. ( I would rather have a high fps then a better resolution )

Yes. And with that combination of CPU and GPU, you can get the same high FPS with more resolution (better monitor).

Just curious if you don't mind me asking. I have a similar setup and was curious how much you spent in total for yours? Just the price for the PC, not the monitor. Speaking of monitors, did you upgrade to 4k and if so how does it fare for you?
