this system has an:
AMD FX Quad Core 3.60 GHz
6 GBs RAM
64 bit OS .. Linux Mint 17.1 and Window 7
Currently running an nVidia GeForce 8400GS w/1GB

I bought a EVGA nVidia GT 740 SC Overclocked w/4GBs ...
this card does NOT work in this system. Looked though the forum here and there are others that have the same issue as I.

"installing it and running the PC .. comes on .. ACER screen appears . .Beep .. still looking ... Beep ... still waiting ...Beep. 3 beeps .. long intervals.. then sits there. I have tried the Quiet Mode thing like another guys tried. .didn't work. I have tried setting my PCIe slot to be Pri/auto .. does the same thing. This sucks man.. Looking forward to this nice card and it don't work. THERE are no power connectors on it.. the GTX has that feature.

SO! i guess i got to return this card BUT .. before blindly getting another video card and "hoping" it works, does anyone have any ideas on what the best nVidia card for around $100 would be?

that's what i thought. IT is disappointing ..really.

I need an alternative. What do i have to do? get an older card? This card looked to be ok. But... I would HATE to use an ATI card.

Until you know if you got a bad card, it's hard to say. I can't think of any reason it would be incompatible with that age PC. Do you have the latest motherboard BIOS? Do you get a display at all when you boot up? Or is it just a blank screen?

You know.. i just noticed. The Requirements for the card on the end of the box states:

THIS graphics card requires:
400 wat power supply with a minimum of 20 amps on the +12 volt rail
PCIe 2.o or 3.0
Win 7 etc. .

I have a 300 wat power Supply.

I THINK that may be the problem there ... NOT enough power.

It could be. I just realized I was mistaken on the power demanded by your old 8400 GS. I thought it was more than the GT 740. But I was in error (after doing some research). The 8400 GS was a 40W (TDP) card. The GT 740 is a 64W card as per Nvidia. You may have just solved your own post;-)

ya.. ill keep the card for now . .i am getting this:

http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Warranty-Power-Supply-100-W1-0430-KR/dp/B00H33SDR4/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1437850396&sr=1-5&keywords=power+supply&pebp=1437850434919&perid=18JGGW3SMMMAZWW1AVPP

and i will let the community know IF i get it working or not. ok? Thx for the help, bro!

UPDATE: MSI GTX 750 Ti .. doesn't work either. Same thing. but check this: i got this MSI card expecting a legacy switch. There was not one on the card. Called MSI support. They said that the card Might or Might Not have a switch on it depending on the version i got. so there is no way to even know when you buy this card that you will even get what is advertised at Amazon. In the specs it states that there is a legacy switch .. a Hybrid BIOS switch. NOT there . .waste of time.. thx MSI.

now i guess i gotta try ATI .. and i dont even want to. This system is like 3 to 4 years old. complete BS this UEFI crap.

This is this 3rd graphics card. shouldn't have this much trouble.
