Hello there,

So I have had this PSU for about 8 years now and it's been incredible. Prior to buying it I always bought cheapie ones that lasted a year for £20, but I spent around £65 on this 8 years ago and it's still going strong.

That leads me to the main question - I'm wanting to upgrade my GPU as I've just recently got a U2515h, games are starting to struggle in 2560x1440 and the R9 290 seems like a good bet but I'm concerned my PSU wouldn't handle it, does anyone know if it will (or wont)?

Solution
It will power it, but I'd be leery due to the age. They with, I believe a 3 year warranty, so I would look at about 5 years before replacing and you said 8 years

If the PSU does fail, what's the worst that could happen? My impression is that it'll just turn off and not turn back on, but is there a chance the short could damage components?

It depends on what fails. In some cases, yeah, it just wont come on again. But at the other extreme, you can get a pretty ugly fireworks show. Is that likely? Probably not. The odds are what will happen is somewhere in between those two choices. It might start causing reboots. Or it might start making noises you've never heard before.

Or it might keep on working for another 5 years.

Been ducking for years, more in my remodeling business doing electric work, have had the 'opportunity' to work with some really great 'electricians', the type that don't live an extremely long life ;) I try to be doing other things when they are playing with wires ;)
