This is my first time building a computer and have done research but am looking for advice on my first build. I would be using this mostly for gaming and would like to max the settings on demanding games like grand theft auto 5 and witcher 3 on 1080p. My build is:
Graphics card
Asus strix radeon r9 390
Power supply
EVGA 220-G2-0750
Memory
G.skills ripjaw 16 gb ram
Hard drive
Wd 2tb
SSD
Samsung 850 pro series 256 gb
Cpu
Intel core i5 4690k
Motherboard
Gigabyte ga z97x gaming 5
Case
Nzxt phantom phan 003

One question I need help on is should i stick with my 390 or go with 8gb of ram and 1 tb and upgrade to a 980. Again this is my first time ever even looking at computer parts so please leave comments any advice is helpful to me. Thanks!

Im going to assume the 1500 is for the tower only?

So this is what I have came up with.:

The i7 will benefit from hyper-threading when gaming and streaming at the same time, as well as the time it takes to render videos is much faster in comparison to the i5. The motherboard has many features in which the msi gaming 5 does not, while these features on the motherboard my not be used very often, you will most defintely want to have them as they make troubleshooting your computer much easier if something were to happen. Theses features include memOK and a coding system that allows you to look up the problem with your computer in the motherboard manual. The coolermaster hyper 212 evo is one of the best...

The coolermaster hyper 212 evo is one of the best bargain cpu coolers. It will keep your cpu temps down. As for video cards. You really don't need the 980 you would do great with a 970 but hey, you have the budget for it. So nivida's cards are better in my opinion. Just for the fact that they have a much better consistency among frame rates as well as the temperature and power usage is lower. You also wont need more than 1tb if your just doing gaming and some streaming. I have a 500gb ssd, and I have three games thousands of pictures and songs, and many applications and I haven't even reached half of my storage yet.

Sorry for such a late response I have been on a counter-strike binge for the past few days. Lemme know if you have any questions!

Thanks for the response i appreciate the help. The one thing i forgot to leave out though is that i live in Canada and the build you put together is 1.5k usd but 2.1k cad which is way out of budget. If its no burden i would greatly appreciate a build like this that fits more into my budget in cad. thank you.

Ok so here is my re-edited build.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sxmvGX

This build will absolutely destroy games at 1080p, in all honesty you could run games at 2k with this setup.

To answer your questions in your original post:

1st: While amd has some great budget cards, I am biased towards nvidia. That being said, I would personally never buy one for my own rig. Although comparing the 390 to the 970 they are roughly equal and cost about the same. So it all depends on what brand you want in your build.

2nd: You don't need a 980 at all. Definitely not for 1080p, it is a waste of money and a terrible decision to sacrifice ram and an ssd in order to afford it. SSD's are necessary and 16gb of ram is perfect for anything that you would like to do.

Lemme know if you need any help or have anymore questions! I would be glad to help!

Happy Building!

P.S. I didn't add a monitor into the budget, but you will want the Asus vg248qe. Don't buy anything with a refresh rate less than 120hz or you will run into screen tearing and stuttering. Basically what happens is your graphics card is shoving out more pixels at faster rate than your monitor can keep up with. ( That was the really rough basic definition of what is occuring )
