I am planning on getting two 980 ti sli for 4k but that is maxing out my budget. I am getting an i7-4790k with those cards. I was wondering if ther is a better performance but cheaper gpu for sli or do I have the best performance for the price?

Well the performance to price ratio is best with a 970 but that is obviously not what you meant. The 980ti is usually the top performing card there is, beating out the titan X in a lot of tests. The only thing better than having 2 980ti's is having 3 of them. At 4k this should do you well but if you are planning on going 1440p then maybe go with a 980.

@Simon, according to Jay (JayzTwoCents), two 980's (not Ti's) is a great combination for 4K gaming. That opinion is not based on my personal experience, as I have none with that precise setup. But better performing, they of course are not.

Were it my money, I'd buy one 980 Ti now and add a second card in 3 months, or after placing extra cash aside from future paychecks.
