Is my laptop still good for gaming or should I upgrade to something better?

If you prefer having a gaming laptop instead of a gaming pc, there is a general rule.Gaming PCs have general better performance. And if you want to game on a laptop get an HQ series processor. And that memory speed, Oh My God xD.If you expect to game with 600 Mhz it's not going to happen.

My laptop is an Asus G73jh, I got it used a few years back as a birthday present, but my sister had gotten it used. It's been able to play games like Far Cry 3, Skyrim and Total War series on medium-high settings pretty well. But I tried playing Witcher 3, and It could barely play on medium, and only slightly better on low.

I'm thinking about building my own PC, so I was simply wondering if that would be a better route since you can progressively upgrade that, compared to a laptop which you can't.

It is a better choice if you build a computer, since they are just more powerful.Take for example the latest laptop 960m and take the GTX 960.The GTX 960 is going to be 40-50% Faster, since with laptops Power sits in the first seat and raw power at the back. The reason you're not able to run it is, because Wither 3 is one of the newest games, which require more power. What's your budget for a new build?

$650 at the highest right now, but I'll soon be getting another job and my range will be raised to about $900.

I could give you a list of parts for $650 build. But for $650 it's not going to be most powerful gaming PC.
If you are going to be building a PC are you going to need or want one of these things?
1- SSD- SSDs stands for Solid State Drive, it has flash Memory instead of a magnetic disk that a HDD has.SSDs are more than 10x faster than an HDD.Why? Becuse flash memory is lightning fast to access and doesn't need an head to move back and forth, and waiting it to complete it's current task before starting another task. Some people have reported their OS starting up in 5 seconds.5 SECONDS!
2-Memory- The golden rule for gaming is that you don't need more than 8GB for gaming. And it is very much true. But if you are going to be video rendering and photo editing, more memory= faster work.

SSD's would be nice, but not mandatory. They do tend to be more expensive.
I have no desire to render or edit, just game, so I don't need that much memory.

I think 120 GB is more than I need for my OS.256 is a bit overkill for me.
There are cheap SSDs for 120GB though. There around 100 Dollars.
Start with a Job and rise your budget, since I can't find the recommended components for the games. An i7 4770 costs $300...What the heck?!
