I have formatted my 750gb WD black 2.5 inch hard drive several times, each to NTFS. Every time I install some sort of game (I've only tested through games on steam) it stops halfway. The next time I start my computer, its says its not initialized in Disk Management. When I go to initialize, it says "The request cannot be performed due to an I/O error." I change SATA ports and it continues to work again only AFTER I reformat it. And then the process repeats. How can I solve this problem? Thanks for all the help :)

Solution
Hey there, gh05twh0w4lk5!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the 2.5" WD Black! :( However, the error is rather concerning so I'd recommend you to test the drive using WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostic tool and check up on its health and SMART status. Just make sure you run the QUICK as well as the EXTENDED test from the software, here's a link to it: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=rjijgo

Another thing you should try is using the HDD on another computer and see if the error persists. If it does, I'd strongly recommend you to contact our technical support and let them know about this. If your WD Black is still covered by the warranty, you should be able to RMA it and get a replacement from us.

does it work, when u uninstall the software, was it working before or this problem occurs daily. i would suggest you to keep the Hard disk without use for some time (like 24 hours ) and Run ChkDsk on the drive to see if there are any bad sectors.'
Go into the Control Panel=>System and Security=>Administrative Tools
Run Computer Management
Click on “Storage” (under “Disk Management”)
You will find a list of drives (called “Discs” in the program), where Disc 0 usually contains your C: drive.
Locate your external drive in the list, right click on the drive area (the rectangle to the right of the drive name), which will probably be called “unallocated”, and RIGHT-click on it. Choose “New Simple Volume” and follow the steps on the screen to repartition and reformat your drive. If compatibility with other systems (e.g. non-Windows) is important, format the disc as FAT32, otherwise choose NTFS. Unless you have have *a lot* of time on your hands (many hours) choose to “Perform a quick format” which will only take seconds.

Check if this helps you.. let me know

Thanks SuperSoph! I had already tried the drive with a different computer entirely and the problem persisted. I forgot to also state that it is not my C:/ drive and is another instead, and it is also no longer being detected by windows or disk management. I had already tried the diagnostic tool on quick test but only when I didnt have it working, and it failed the SMART test. I also tried chkdsk but i remember it failing as well, but i do not recall the error at this point. I dont know what that means, but lemme know if that helps at all. However, i do not have warranty on this drive. I need a drive asap too and i dont have the money xD I will try the extended test as well even though the quick had failed. Thanks very much :D

I've tried the Diagnostic Tool again and it failed the quick SMART test. I also noticed (thanks to steam downloads tab) that the disc writing would peak for a split second and then after drop down to no activity. And then after about ten seconds would peak again. Let me know if this helps with the awesome solution making you guys are doing :D :3

Using Diskpart and the code ATTR DISK CLEAR READONLY, i have been able to fix the problem. I can now continue to use the drive, yet i will wait to see if the problem still continues. Fingers crossed :D
P.S. This drive was also previously used in a server. Would that have caused any issue?

Hi again, gh05twh0w4lk5!

I think that since the WD Black failed the quick test, you should keep an eye on it even if it's accessible. I wouldn't trust any important data with it without doing regular back ups. However, I don't think that previously being in a server should cause any specific issues.
Still the diagnostic test seems pretty concerning to me, I'd really advise you to contact either by phone or e-mail our technical support and let them know about the issues with that HDD. You can refer to the link above with the WD Support contacts. :)
You also mentioned some disk writing peaks/drops, is this happening when transferring (copying) files to the drive or only when downloading from the web?

Keep me updated! :D

The writing peaks/drops occured not only from downloading from the web, but also installing the games from disk media and copying files over from each harddrive
I'll also consider phoning Western Digital as well
Thanks again for everything
:D
