Upgrading my CPU (noob question)

I'm just starting to learn about computer hardware now. I am looking to upgrade my shitty PC to a slightly less shitty PC. My motherboard is H-Apricot-RS780L-uATX (Apricot). This is my budget computer from 2010:
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02623676-25
It lists the processors I could upgrade to.
A few questions
- Are those really my only choices to upgrade to? Could it be an Intel processor?
- What would be a better generally? A 2.8 GHZ cpu with three cores or a 3 GHZ cpu with two cores.
- How much would my performance improve with for example this cpu: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Phenom-II-X3-B75-Processor-HDXB75WFK3DGI-3-0GHz-Socket-AM3-CPU-/181814713775?hash=item2a55005daf

I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, I'm in high school and have a part time job.

Yes, that's pretty much the processors that would have full support. No you cannot use Intel as the socket and chipset are different. The one you linked will provide a good upgrade, but will still be behind (a lot) from today's standard. The 3 core will be better but you don't really see 3 cores toady so keep that in mind (it will only matter in some programs). What is your budget? we could try to see what we can do, maybe replacing motherboard and CPU.

Thanks for the information. It's good to know that it's still a good upgrade, but I expected it to be out of date. I get paid minimum wage so I'm only looking to spend around $100 dollars, preferably no more than that.

No you will have a higher clock speed from a similar if not identical architecture and you will have 2 more cores. The more cores is what is more important at that core count as most games require 2 cores at least, although a lot require 4. But this will also allow you to have 3 programs running at full speed rather than only 1. It will still be out of date but it will be less so. If you save up and still want to upgrade, feel free to PM and I'll try to help you out.

Isn't 100 dollars enough for a quad core processor? I'm only looking to spend that much for now.

You will also need a new motherboard so, no. Not one that would be worth it to do all of that for

So about how much should I have to spend? I might be able to save up to 200 dollars.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/D7DZdC this would be much better. But if it's possible, if you save up to $250 you could replace that i3 I linked with the i5 4460. I know the feeling, I am also in high school working part time.

The one you showed me seems good I think I'll go with that. So will that motherboard be compatible with my other parts? I'll be able to buy that in two months or so.

Yep, it will all work. I would also suggest getting ATLEAST 2 more GBs of RAM preferably 6 ( you may just have to buy a 8GB kit and sell the RAM you already have in there). You do only have 2GB of RAM correct? That motherboard will also support anything up to the i7 4790k should you ever decide to upgrade
