Installing Windows 10 shouldn't erase your data, but you should always backup so it's good you are!
You need to buy an external hard drive of at least the capacity of your PC - then the next steps are up to you. Personally I copy over all of my documents, photos, music, videos but not the OS. So if something happens to my PC, I have to reinstall the OS but all of my personal files are still available.

I do have a western digital passport external hard drive. Do i just copy my C drive over to the external? I dont want to bring my Windows 8 OS over to the new windows 10 and when i tried doing that it said it couldn't copy certain files because they were in use. Thank you for your help again!
