My old pc running Windows XP has died, but data has been backed up on WD my book essential external hard drive. I need to transfer this data to my iMac. The mac seems to open the Ex HD but I cannot make sense of the file info listed, nor transfer any of it to the iMac

how to install backup on WD my book essential from pc running Windows XP to my iMac? Help please!

How was the data getting backed up to the external drive from your windows machine? If there was some backup agent putting the data on the drive you will likely need to load this agent on your mac to make use of the files on the hard drive. The only other thing that comes to mind is if the drive was formatted as ntfs, but I'm pretty certain macs can natively read ntfs they just can't write to it now.
