What do I need to upgrade to improve performance / reduce lag?

I have had this build for about 10 months and I feel as if it needs something more added. The main issue I want to clear up is lag. The system handles most games quite well but I tend to lag a bit with higher settings, here are my specs:

Windows 7
CPU: AMD fx-6300 six-core 3.51 GHz
GPU: ASUS Geforce GTX 760
MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Storage: Sandisk 240GB SSD (C) + Seagate 1T HDD (E)
RAM: 8GB
Power: Corsair CX500M

I know that I probably should upgrade my power supply first but that still will not help with performance. I'm not an expert on computer building so I need someone elses opinion on this please.

You really need a new CPU/GPU. AN i5 and a better GPU would help alot, but that is expensive. I would start with a new GPU. Something like a gtx970. Then you can see if the CPU is or if it is holding you back.

Also, yes you must replace the PSU. It is a poor quality unit that WILL give you issues later down the road and is not safe for the PC.

How much free space do you have on your SSD? SSDs don't like being full, so you need atleast 25% free space at all times. You could try an overclock if your system allows it.If your socket can support it get an FX 8350

It has 149GB free of 238GB (it has 62% free), I'm not sure about overclocking as I've never thought about it due to me being worried it may overheat. I might consider it if I knew more about the risks and how to overclock.

So more ram can help with performance too?

Back in the old days of computer more RAM always ment more performance. But things have changed since then.A lot.We went from full room sized computers to smartphones. In today's world more RAM can improve performance. If you have 32 or 64 GB of RAM upgrading it to 128GB of RAM is not going to help you.Get as much RAM as you are going to use.Gaming never use more than 8GB, Video & Photo editing like RAM, but 16 GB is good. What do you do mostly on this PC?

James Junior (My other account that I don't use since it was a pain in my ass) wrote a tutorial on how to overclock and the risks of overclocking. What cooler do you have? Stock?

I dont edt or create videos, gaming performance is the only thing I'm worried about.

I have a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 CPU cooler. The rest of the case has 3 120mm fans + 2 80mm fans built in (Zalman z11 case)

I have good settings on most games, most games do not lag but some really do and I wanted to reduce some if I can

Yes lower settings do reduce lag. Most of the games I play are downloaded (mostly steam games). There is a game called Besiege on steam that is very intensive on higher speeds. Its not any particular game I want to increase performance but get components for an all round better computer.

You hould be able to give it an overclock. Take a look at this forum: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/281180-29-overclocking-6300-sabertooth-990fx
And also my tutorial on how to overcock CPU.

Thankyou, but I dont think my motherboard can support intel. Also, what PSU do you recommend?

Thanks I will look into it.

That is correct. You would need to buy a new motherboard.
