I'm trying to decide between 1 SSD and running the popular SSD + HDD setup in my upcoming desktop gaming build.

Would 1 500GB 850 EVO that has both the OS and all games storage be faster than a smaller SSD with the OS on it and all my Storage on a 1 TB HDD? Is there any disadvantage to just running 1 SSD for the whole rig?

I'll be running an ASUS X97 Pro with the i7 4790K

Solution
A single 500gb ssd will be faster for everything and easier to manage.
I do exactly that.
The only advantage of a hard drive compared to a SSD is lower cost per gb.
If you will store large sequential files such as videos, then a hard drive would be appropriate.

I have a 250gb SSD (100$) for my OS and the 2 games I play all the time. then I have a 1TB HDD (free cause it came with, but maybe 50$) for everything else. the rare game, pictures, music. to get that much storage with just an SSD you would have to spend ALOT more and it probably wouldn't be worth it for most people

Thanks for the replies. I'm not really on a budget for this build and I think HDD are quickly becoming obsolete. I don't mind adding another SSD later if I need to. Do SSD's with the OS loaded onto them need any special formatting or partitioning? Or just slap the OS and everything else on it and let it do it's thing?

Yes, you load the os, just like you would with any other sata drive.
Like a hard drive, you may be invited to format it first.
Do not have any other hard drive attached during the install or windows will try to load a 100mb hidden partition on it, complicating things.
