First and foremost, Hello guys. This is my first day here and with what I have seen here, I just like to say you guys are amazing and deserve loads of kudos for putting your time in helping, solving problems of us anonymous guys (like me).

This problem is a pretty common one actually. I read loads of threads about it and none did it for me as most of the solutions were GPU related and currently, I don't have a GPU installed on my pc. I did have one but it went bonkers and i showed it the window. Problem is not gpu related since everything was running fine without it before last month or so no matter what I played.

So this computer freezes while watching 1080p videos (it never freezes at 720p), while watching online videos at full screen. I noticed it also freezes every time I make quick shifts among a number of tabs in the browser.

I guess the problem is with my Hard Disk. Didn't have this problem before I purchased this new set of piece ( A 1 TB WB HDD) , but I'm still not sure. I had run a hard disk check software and it didn't show a problem. I checked Ram and it too came out fine.

Please help. Nothing saddening than having a full high definition monitor panel and being not unable to use it for the quality.

Here is the system info :

I currently also have a Q6600 installed, along with a Radeon 5770, 8gb of ram, and a new SSD, in one of my machines. There is real struggle to decode full 1080p video, even with the 5770 (which stomps all over the integrated graphics). I get this freezing as well, and am forced to restart the machine. Same behavior no matter which OS I install. (note that I am currently running Linux Mint, and have not spent any time optimizing it, so it is very likely the graphics card is not being used to its full potential)

I have chalked this up to just out dated hardware, but am responding here in case something interesting is suggested.

Hi.
I bet it's not some hardware error. Your pc specs are more than enough to play anything HD.
My computer was running supremely without a GPU, playing everything from games to full hd videos, even till last month when the HDD crashed. I bought a new one, did a fresh install of windows 7 and this problem has been persisting since then only. It could either be a HDD error which I doubt since I have had it checked by all possible checking softwares ( and moreover pc simply shuts to black when hdd is the problem) ,or it could be a simple windows fault. My friend suggested me yesterday that this problem is windows related and a fresh boot of the same windows won't work. He had this problem too and he just changed the windows from 7 to 8.1 pro and his problem was solved. So I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow and will share whatever comes up.

Interesting on tidbit on the win 7/8.1 situation. I can confirm that I have this same crash situation occur with both Mint 17.1, Ubuntu 12.4, and Ubuntu 15.04. I have an old windows XP key sitting around that I could try, but I likely will not have the free time to test until Thursday at the earliest.
Ubuntu and Mint are installed on seperate drives - Ubuntu on an old 250GB platter, and Mint on a new (less than 6 months) 60GB SSD.

The reason I figured it was a hardware limitation is that when I used this tower as a desktop, running a monitor at 1680x1050 was not a problem. But since moving it to my living room to serve HTPC duty, I encounter somewhat random freezes playing HD content on my 1080p TV screen.

Generally speaking, it would crash between 15 and 25 minutes into playing a video, although it has frozen as early as 5 minutes, and once made it through an entire 50 minute show.

I could not distinguish any difference in stability when I opened the case and pointed a fan at it to try and eliminate heat as a potential cause.

I have an E6800 sitting in a spare mobo that might be worth trying?

Not sure if any of this info proves useful to you, but more data never hurts.

Hi. This is to inform that my problem has been resolved. My SNPS died sudden death and with the sudden shock, hdd too gave up. I bought a brand new SNPS and replaced hdd as it's under warranty. Both components changed and everything is running fine now. No sudden freezes, no black outs. Though I still can't say if it was hdd or SNPS which of the two was responsible for the jams but if to choose, I'll go for snps as it was the one who took the last breath first. :)
