Hi everyone,

I have an Allied Telesis 16 port switch with mdi/mdi-x ports. I want to connect it to my Huawei HG-530 ADSL router to increase the number of ports. The router has 4 regular LAN ports and i cannot find information whether they are mdi/mdi-x or not and am assuming that they aren't. My question is that if they are not mdi/mdi-x compatible should i use a crossover cable or the switch having that functionality will be sufficient to go with a straight through cable? For some reasons i don't have the opportunity to test them myself right now.

Shortly, can i connect them using any ports on both devices with any kind of cable and make it work?

Thanks in advance...

If either end of the link is auto MDI/MDI-X, you're OK with any cable.

I don't think you'll find any device from the last decade without auto-detection - it's just so easy to implement.

I think that's when you're meant to use a crossover cable, actually.

Auto MDI/MDI-X is mandatory for GbE ports, and even on 100BASE-TX it's almost everywhere. Only when you're dealing with actual hubs and 10Mb/s gear do you need to worry.
