I wanted to upgrade from 2GB to 4 GB (or whatever 32 bit can read). I bought a new ram. Both sticks are working in either of the sockets individually. But, when I try to place them both and restart, I hear a 'beep' sound and then as if computer stops there only, it does not boot to Bios and further. Killing power and then removing one of the sticks restarts the computer normally.

I have updated my bios too to the latest update but problem persists.

I am out of ideas and need suggestion. Request you to please shed some light on it. I guess I can return the newly bought ram but then I wish to upgrade to 3-4 GB.

Basic stats:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)

Okay so first of all,

I would have to suggest you to atleast upgrade towards Windows 7 / Windows 8 because Windows XP is not supported by Microsoft anymore.

Question 1: Are the banks identical? Do you have Dual, single or quad on your motherboard?
Question 2: Have you checked at which one it makes the beeping sound?
Question 3: (relative to question 2)Is one of them faulty perhaps?
